It's a Boerboel's Life
Maggie is a rare breed dog called a Boerboel (pronounced Bore Bowl), also known as a South African Mastiff. Mastiffs are considered a type of guard dog. Maggie was born on January 26, 2006 and came to live with us on April 9th at the tender age of 10 weeks and weighing a mere 22 lbs. As she approaches her 16 week birthday she is tipping the scales at 35 lbs. Her father weighed 150 lbs while her mother was only 100 lbs. I'm hoping she maxes near 80 lbs., but then I could be in denial.
Her mother came from Germany and like Maggie was a brindle. As a matter of fact, all Maggie's five brothers and sisters are brindles. Some are black and fawn and others, like Maggie, are black and apricot. Her father came from a breeder in Pennsylvania.
The South African Boerboel Breeders' Association (SABT) was created in South Africa in 1983, and the first recognition of the Boerboel as a distinct and separate breed. The American Kennel Club (AKC) does not recognize this breed. A very informative site on Boerboels is a Dutch website. It is in both Dutch and English --- just click on the British flag.
