What a beautiful morning for racing! It did get a bit hot at the end, but not all that bad. The racing was great too. Many very nice tight heats. On the glow side we had a new racer show up in the form of Bill Burke. Bill came last month with a couple E-200 planes but surprised everyone yesterday by showing up with both an E-200 and Norvel powered 1/2a glow plane. Mel also came with his Picco powered Hill Racer which flew real fast in pre-race, but a bad charging jack switch shorted and burned up his battery just before the races. He worked on installing a new RX battery while we ran the first three rounds of E-200 only to have a radio lock-out while doing a final trim flight... if it wasn't for bad luck I don't think Mel would have any luck at all. Bill had the typical initiation into 1/2A... lots and lots of plane and engine problems. I'm sure he'll get those worked out by next month. Marty ran Mel's Picco (on Marty's plane) for the final three rounds of glow and he ran fast! In the first race with the Picco (round 4) Marty had a little problem getting it started and didn't get into the air until everyone else had launched. Marty caught up around lap 5 and was pressing for the lead. The race then got very tight resulting in both Marty and Jon F cutting out. The next race saw Jon F's GZ sputter (too rich) the whole race and quit on the backstretch of the final lap but he was able to coast it around 2 and 3 and past the finish line. That final round was a nice tight race between everyone... good racing. Mike had a real good day. His planes flew pretty fast and he flew very consistent. For the month of July, Marty and I finished tied for first with Mike only one point behind us. The season totals show me in first with Marty in second and Mike in third.
On the E-200 side in addition to Bill Burke's new face, Jon Packer came out again. Marty and Kimberly again had great days with very few mistakes. Dale and Jon F flew well too. Lloyd, Mark and Spencer had up and down days with a few hiccups here and there. Spencer fought though motor issues and loose wire connections. Jeff showed very nice improvement and is really starting to get a handle on his plane. Bill lost his plane in the sun near the end of his second race resulting in his plane turning into a lawn dart. Jon P lost his plane during the first race and finally found it over near Walmart in about 1000 pieces. Sorry about that guys... get building so you'll have something for next month! Marty took first with Dale and Kimberly tied for second only one point behind and I took third just a point behind Dale and Kimberly. The season totals show Kimberly in first with Marty only one point behind her and Jon F in third 12 point behind Marty.
[editor's note: It's been surprising to me how well everyone has progesses racing these planes the last couple years. There are very few "easy" heats. Everyone races well. Another couple years and I think we'll have 10 people all seriously competing for a win!]
What a great day of racing. Hope to see you all next month too!
