Gateway to Learning

Check out the Gateway to Learning area at Fall Festival put on by the Library Foundation.

The Gateway will include a number of interesting and interactive areas including:

Entry/Prize Booth

The first booth in our zone arrangement will be the entrance and prize booth. This booth will mainly serve as our ‘gateway’ into the other booth activities that we have designed. Students will be given small booklets, called ‘passports’, with the opportunity to earn a stamp at each booth. Prizes will be awarded at this booth for those students who return a completed passport booklet.

Math Tic-Tac-Toe Booth

This booth serves as a direct link to the mathematics portion of our S.T.E.A.M. themed zone. Participants will be given a math equation and asked to solve it by tossing whiffle balls into the tic-tac-toe game board, where numbers and numeric operands will be displayed in the boxes.

Frisbee Booths

These two booths serve as a direct link to the arts portion of our S.T.E.A.M. themed zone. Students will be given the opportunity to turn a plain white frisbee disk into a personalized, colorful, and creative design using the frisbee spin art machines.

S^4: Super Summer Science Search Research Contest Booths

The S^4 section consists of two booths arranged to display the work created by past contestants. This gallery walk will showcase the presentations and reports of a number of 2015 and 2016 contest participants in order to present both the students’ creative research projects as well as spread awareness of the S^4 contest.

Science Experiments Booth

This booth serves as a direct link to the science portion of our S.T.E.A.M. themed zone. This booth will present two science experiments. The first experiment will explain the concept of a non-Newtonian fluid, a substance that displays physical properties of both solids and liquids, using a simple cornstarch and water mixture. The second will demonstrate DNA extraction using mashed strawberries and rubbing alcohol.

Trivia Booth

The trivia booth will consist of a trivia spin wheel, where each number on the wheel will correspond to a trivia question, organized by school grade level. Students will be asked to answer the question and will be given a prize for participation.

Cupertino Library Events Booth

The Cupertino Library librarians will host a booth at the Gateway To Learning Zone in order to spread awareness about the programs and initiatives the library has to offer, while promoting reading in children and adults of all ages.

TPumps Drinks Booth

This booth will host a fundraising component of the Gateway to Learning Zone. Teen Council and Cupertino Library Foundation members will collaborate to sell TPumps pearl milk tea drinks for $4 in an effort to draw attention to the Gateway to Learning Zone and also to provide Teen Council members a valuable fundraising experience.
