What is this?
Former National Hurling Director, Paudie Butler, has developed a Fundamentals Programme to help develop fundamental movement skills among children. Agility, Balance, Coordination, Running, Jumping, Throwing/Catching and Passing skills underpin all sports and are key to getting children active and away from sedentary lifestyles. If children can get comfortable with the basics at primary school level they should be positively disposed to exercise and sport once they enter second level schools. It is recognized that if a child doesn't engage with PE in their early years they are much more likely to drop out of sport all together and partaking in exercise. To deliver this eight to twelve week programme in a systemised way to all schools using specialised equipment and incorporating training modules for teachers as designed by Paudie Butler.
To compliment the programme, Paudie Butler has worked closely with sports goods manufacturer Peter Curran in developing a suitable pack that could best be used to develop these skills in schools and clubs. The pack contains specially sourced footballs, bean bags, bean balls, 18” hurls and marking mats. Combined with this, they have produced a DVD which was filmed in Westmeath (Loughegar NS) where activities are detailed for all classes in primary school with progressions and adaptations included to make the session as basic or as challenging as is required. This DVD is an excellent resource for teachers and when combined with training workshops for teachers, it should lead to teachers being comfortable delivering the programme and the children involved really enjoying each session.
To help support the roll out of this programme a pack can be tailor made to suit the school requirement.

A school that wants to develop both hurling and football
Each pack will contain:
65 no coloured marking mats
30 no beanbags
20 no bean balls
30 no dimple balls
8 no size 2 and 7 size 3 footballs (can be changed to 15 of either)
30 no 18" indoor hurls
1 no DVD of Fundamental Movement Skills Programme
1 no Holdall Bag
Equipment for 30 children at one time and suitable for every class in the school.
