Where to Purchase Items:

It is highly recommended that new scouts purchase their initial uniform at an official BSA scout store - either the one in Pleasant Hill (preferred location since it is the store for our council) or San Leandro (note that this store may not have the Mt Diablo Silverado Council patch). The personnel in these stores are very nice and are used to helping new families purchase their uniforms!

Bear Cub Uniform
  • Pleasant Hill Scout Shop (800 Ellinwood Way, Pleasant Hill) - http://www.mdscbsa.org/about/council/scout-shop/

    • Since this is the official BSA shop for our council, they are most likely to have everything you need and they have staff that can answer your questions.

    • They also have a service (for a fee) that sews on the patches for you.

  • East Bay Scout Shop (1001 Davis Street, San Leandro) - http://www.sfbac.org/about-us/east-bay-scout-shop/62659

    • Since this is an official BSA store, they should have everything you need except they likely do not have the Mt Diable Silverado Council pathc (since this store is associated with another council). The staff will be able to answer all of your questions.

  • McCaulou's (589 San Ramon Valley Blvd, Danville)

    • Inventory is more limited and prices are higher than the official BSA stores, but it is very convenient.

    • Do not expect staff to be able to answer any uniform questions.

  • Online - www.scoutstuff.org

    • You can shop online, but it is difficult to get everything you need online and you cannot see the shirt sizes.

    • It is a good place to go to see what the items you need to buy look like and prices

Before most pack meetings we normally make a trip to the Scout Shop. You might contact the Advancement Chair if you need a patch or two - we might be able to save you a trip and pick them up for you at our cost. You are also welcome to order any needed items online or however you like.

Time to Sew?

The image to the top right will help with the placement of emblems and patches. See Emblem Placement doc for more details.

Local store, Crow Canyon Alterations, sews on the cub scout patches for about $2/patch. They are very knowledgeable with regards to patch placement and have the uniform templates available in the shop for reference. The official BSA scout stores also provide this service, but the fee is a little higher.

Wearing the Uniform

In general, every Cub Scout should wear his uniform to all Cub Scouting activities, including den and pack meetings, unit outings, and any activities done with members of the den or pack.

When playing sports, going to camp, or participating in other physical activities, a pack may opt to have the Cub Scouts wear an alternate uniform, such as an activity shirt. These are sometimes referred to as Class B Uniforms.

Pack leaders should provide advance notice of any occasion when the boys should wear anything other than the complete uniform.

Here are some tips for wearing the uniform:

  • DO keep the uniform clean and in good repair. The official uniform is a sturdy, machine-washable garment that will last for years with proper care.

  • DO be sure to wear the complete uniform. A Cub Scout wearing a uniform with parts missing is not in uniform.

  • DO NOT wear non-BSA badges, awards, or insignia on the Cub Scout uniform or make any alterations to the uniform or insignia.

  • DO NOT mix uniform parts with non-uniform clothing, such as wearing a uniform cap with other clothing or wearing the uniform shirt with blue jeans. The uniform should be treated as a unit—worn in its entirety, or not at all.

Any time you are uncertain about uniform regulations, ask the den leader for guidance.
