Pack 396's Pinewood Derby Homepage

Please sign up for what your den is slated. Most things are very short term things dealing with setup/check-in/etc. Things are distributed by den, with the larger dens generally responsible for more.

Race Activities - What to Expect

This is usually the longest meeting of the year. Schedule is as follows:

Friday 2/3:
  • ~8:00: After track is setup, we will be running a full test race with older cars to verify full proper operation of the track.
Saturday 2/4:
  • 11:00 Final setup, if needed
  • 12:00-12:30 FINAL REGISTRATION. If you were unable to check-in Friday night, or had to modify your car, this is your last chance to enter your car.
  • 12:30-1:00: People's Choice voting and Special Prize judging. This is your chance to see the cars and vote on your favorite car THAT IS NOT YOUR CAR. The heats and final race prep are during this time as well. This will also be the first portion of the pack meeting with info and/or awards
  • 1:00-3:00ish Running the heats for the derby cars. If everyone enters a car, it WILL take at least 2 hours to run all the heats. We will be taking breaks roughly every ½ hour during this time to pass out pins and patches and the like. Also information about camp. Special derby awards during this time as well.
  • 3:15-ish: Trophy presentations! First, Second, and Third places will be awarded at each den level and for the overall pack champions.

"Be Fast... or Look Good Trying"

The pinewood derby is one of the most popular and successful family activities in Cub Scouting. Pinewood derby cars are small wooden models that Cub Scouts make with help from their families. Then they race the cars in competition. The cars are powered by gravity and run down a track. Every boy can design and build his own "grand prix" car to enter in the race.

Race Day Highlights

There will be two divisions...

1) The Scout Derby - with the three fastest cars qualifying for the District Pinewood Derby (if applicable)

2) The Sibling Derby - Scout brothers and sisters through fifth grade can enter their own cars.

Prizes and Recognition

The Derby is about doing one's best and having fun, so all child participants will be recognized.  But that doesn't mean our race winners won't take home some shiny hardware.

Derby Workshops

There will be opportunities to mold and shape the block of pinewood into a mean lean well-decorated racing machine.  We will announce dates and times for the workshops once we get the parents lined up who will be supervising the shop tools.  The boys are not permitted to use power tools but they are encouraged to design the shape of their cars, sand them, and decorate them accordingly.  Parents are encouraged to assist the child but they should let the child do most of the work.

Equal Ground

All entries in the derby will start with the "Official Grand Prix Pinewood Derby Kit" which includes the body, 4 axles, and 4 wheels.  All nine pieces MUST be used before the car can race. The kits are sold at the local Scout Shop or online.  All active Scouts will receive a kit as a Christmas present in December. Parent and siblings are on their own.  Cars may not exceed 5 ounces in weight and must conform to certain size restrictions and specifications.  Decorating the cars are up to the imagination of the boys.  The complete set of rules will be available at the Derby Workshops. Please don't worry about the small print specifically worded to exclude the leaders from some or all of the rules.
