Pack 43 held its annual Pinewood Derby on Sunday, January 29, 2012 at the American Legion Hall Post 419 in Santa Clara. It is a standing tradition for Pack 43 to set up our track at the Legion Hall on the last Sunday of January and race the day away! Each scout and their family spent many hours building cars that were as unique as they were fast. After many of weeks of preparation by our experienced racing officials, headed up by Keplin Johansen, the event came together flawlessly.
We’d like to extend a big thanks to Steve Villegas who opened the hall bright and early so we could set up the track. By 11:00am, the first trial runs were being done. We were pleased to continue the tradition of hosting Pack 323 from Don Callejon School again this year. The Pack 323 Tigers started their heats before noon and by 1:00pm the last scouts from their pack were done.
Pack 43 had a brief opening ceremony and got its Tiger Dens running by 1:00pm. What a glorious outpouring of enthusiasm! Every Cub Scout family was truly fully engaged in every one of the more than 120 heats! "- -1---2--RACE!" was heard again and again. Thanks to the efforts of our Pit Crew, headed up by Rebecca Ross and Margaret Nolin, the scouts stayed fueled up in between the heats. By 2:00pm, the victorious Tiger racers had been determined and we off to the races for the rest of the cubs. The overall winners were determined by 3:00pm. We concluded the day with the Open race, where family members, siblings or second entries were run. After the last car shot down the track, the Legion Hall was transformed from a high octane racing circuit to the calmer dining hall we all know and love.
Congratulation to the four scouts who will advance to the District race. Remember that every scout who participated was winner. The cars will be on display at out Blue and Gold Banquet on February 17th. Prizes will be awarded at that time.
Thanks again to Legion Post and Steve Villegas for their support. A big thank you goes to our racing officials, Keplin Johansen, Doyle Bennett, and Dave Martin, for the incredible logistics effort. Their hard work resulted in one of the smoothest races in years. Thank you to Rebecca Ross and Margaret Nolin for running the always popular Pit Stop snack bar and thanks to all the volunteers that worked selling food and cleaning up afterwards. The 2012 Pinewood Derby would not have been possible without you!
