Course Approval Process

Before you begin the Course Approval Process, make certain to consult the JHSPH Key Dates and Deadlines as well as consult with your Department's Academic Coordinator about Department Deadlines, curriculum committees, and potential overlaps with and/or modifications to existing courses. In addition, faculty should be mindful of the steps that go toward successful Course Development.

The dates on this interactive timeline are "mock ups"; it is the order of the steps that needs to be followed! (The steps are also presented below in a non-interactive format.)

Key Steps toward Course Approval:

The Idea

You have a great idea for a new class, or you have a face-to-face class you'd like modify and put online. Have you identified a need for this class? Here's a reference on course design and development on the JHSPH Teaching Toolkit to help you work through your plans and ideas.

Your Department

Speak with your department chair and/or curriculum committee representative and gain consensus for your planned course, keeping in mind the need and competencies. For reference: Course Design and Development - see "Need" and "Competencies".

Contact CTL Director

Before you get too much more done, once you have the backing of your department, contact the CTL Director and/or Deputy Director with your ideas/plans, and the term you plan to offer the course.

CTL will collaborate with you throughout the entire design and development of the course. This document provides an overview of the entire production process.

Work With an Instructional Designer

An instructional designer (ID) will contact you to work with you on the syllabus, assessments, and planning the course content design. More details can be found on the Course Design and Development page: Develop Objectives; Create Assessments; Design Learning Activities; and Align Objectives, Assessments, Activities.

Prepare for Recording Content

While most online and blended JHSPH courses have recorded slides with voice over narration, there are many types of content that can be used to meet your course learning objectives. (Also see the CTL course demonstration to see examples of types of lectures and recordings).  During this phase, you will focus on creating content and discussing this with your ID. For those planning to into the studio to record voice-over-Powerpoint, here are some guidelines for preparing slides and recording tips

Recording Content

During this phase you will record the content for your course. Your slides, images, audio and video will be recorded and edited by our professionals at CTL and posted into your course. You will have the opportunity to work with audio and/or video producers, as well meet with them in advance to plan and prepare. You will need to plan to record in the studio at least 8 weeks prior to the time you need to open the content to students.

After the recording is complete, the team of audio editors, tech writers, medical illustrator, web developers and quality confirmation specialists makes their magic happen over the course of the next several weeks. The finished product is then posted in your online course lecture pages, or on a web page of links for a blended course. Preparing for Students

As it gets closer to the start of your course, it's time to finalize all readings (in the online library and/or e-reserves), and work with your instructional designer to prepare all quizzes, assignments, activities, assessments, instructions, and other information for students to be successful in your course.
