A life well lived
In 1956 Robert Kynaston joined the Edgware Section of the CTC West London DA. For 51 years he was a regular runs leader and tour organizer. Bob served on the committee in a variety of posts, most recently as our Treasurer and President. He was also a frequent member of the DA committee, serving for many years’ duration, particularly as Treasurer and Chairman, but also as President. Bob organized and marshalled at countless DA and Section events. During the 1970s and into the 80s when cycling was in the doldrums and certainly not the fashion statement of today, he and Wendy worked relentlessly to maintain the Edgware Section of the West London DA. For his lifetime support of cycling he was awarded the CTC’s highest honour.
The Westerley Road Club, affiliated to the CTC, also had Bob’s support for over 45 years. He did practically every job going, particularly organizing many of their road events, including the 100 mile timetrial on several occasions; training and encouraging young cyclists on track and road. He also served as Treasurer and was President when he died. Details of his competitive achievements are available on the Westerley website (www.westerleycycling.org.uk).
In the early 1960s Bob took over the administration of the CTC time trialling competition and subsequently the DATC. He continued to spend many hours on computer and telephone dealing with results and complaints and compiling the awards list. He also compiled and coordinated CTC “events” for the website and Cycle magazine.
For years he organized and ran the CTC shop at the York Rally.
Bob represented cycling interests with local authority and other representative bodies as a consummate all-round cyclist and wonderful ambassador for cycling across a wide spectrum.
He will be greatly missed by all involved in Hertfordshire and London cycling for his unfailingly sensible advice, his vast knowledge of all aspects of cycling and his constant belief in the future.
