Over the past 17 months, your President and Executive Board members have spent a great deal of time developing relationships with the BUSD Board of Trustees. We have been bringing them the stories of our members who have been financially struggling. We have let them know our displeasure with the raises given to unrepresented employees in the district office who got new job responsibilities and a 9% increase in compensation.
We have also taken time to listen to the statistics evaluated by our Executive Director who is the trained expert and whose job is to get us the largest raise possible given the district's finances.
Based on that, your bargaining team negotiated one of the best contracts in the region amongst non-basic aid districts. I applaud them for their dedicated efforts on all of our behalves.
With the knowledge that there will be additional money coming in the near future, your Executive Board voted to recommend ratification with the intent that we will open negotiations for the 2014-17 contract in the next couple of months.
"Take the 4 and Let's Go Back for More!"
Happy New Year!
We have won a great victory in negotiating the most generous contract amongst similar local districts. Pending ratification by membership, our members will not have additional medical benefit money coming out of their wallet and they will have 4% more on salary and 1 $1500 one time payment.
Yet, that is not enough. We still remain in the bottom 30% of Santa Clara Districts (a bit better than in the bottom 10%). We have a school board and a Superintendent and cabinet that understand this and are willing to bargain in good faith after years of unreasonable obstructionism.
Members have the opportunity to step forward and volunteer to make our union stronger. In the next 2 months, all positions on the Executive Board will be up for election in March.
My vision is to build capacity and to be more inclusive of all our members. I encourage people who want to work for a positive union that advocates for all our members to file to run for office.
The 7 Executive Board positions up for election are:
Elementary At Large Representative (2 positions)
Middle School At Large Representative
Up for Election in March 2015:
CTA State Council Representative (a 3 year term)
We also urge members who are interested in attending the CTA Summer Institute at UCLA to be trained for the Bargaining Team to contact me to be put on the list. The Rep Council has voted to focus our funding for those taking the Bargaining and related trainings at UCLA. It is also our local's policy that only those who have attended the training be considered for open positions on the bargaining team.
In solidarity, let's move forward!
As I take on the duties of CTA of Berryessa president, I do so with almost a decade of experience in being active in our association in many other positions.
My main goal is to actively listen to the needs and concerns of all our members and to build capacity....that is to build a sense of empowerment amonst our members to actively work towards common goals.
I look forward to working with you this year.
