CTAB of Berryessa

A New Start to a New Year

Address of CTAB President to General Meeting (full version) to General Meeting on August 19, 2015.

Good morning, CTAB members

I would like to introduce our Executive Board members:

VP. Leticia Vasquez
Secretary Enrico Amutan
Treasurer Melanie Ontiveros
MS Rep Kathy Wolterbeeck
Elem Reps John Cheadle and Ginger Jenzen

As I start this, my 4th and final year as your leader, having been honored to be elected twice as president and having served on your Executive Board since 2002, I want to tell you that you all inspire me

I am inspired by the decades of dedication to the children in our district by so many of our veteran members. I marvel at the fresh ideas and abundant energy of our newer teachers. I am inspired by the multigenerational devotion to our district of teachers such as the recently retired Mel and Gail Ausman and their sons and daughter in law who now teach amongst us

I am awed by my hero, Jan Carlson Williams who we honored this morning who rose before the sun each morning to nurture the minds of a generation of Math and Avid students

I am totally blown away by those members who drive over 100 miles a day to and from work as they balance their love for the children of Berryessa and having a house that they can afford for their own family

I am enthralled by the teachers who personally fund supplies and even food to nurture the students' hunger to learn and to have their young hungry tummies filled

I am inspired by the personal stories of our members' sacrifices told at a board meeting less than 2 years ago which helped us earn pay increases over the past 2 years of 9.5 %
I will always remember the moving testaments of Christie, Steve, Kathy, Leticia and so many others

You shared those stories because.... We are all in this together

We are all indebted to the passion and dedication of our bargaining team as they continue the struggle in our name for professional pay and benefits for our highly educated and noble profession. I know that we are in good hands of the team we will introduce today

I am filled with respect for my colleagues who hold themselves up as models of lifelong advocates for students with high academic standards and lifelong learners, such as my friend Dr. Chris Davis

But besides thatl, I am inspired by those who continue the work of our association, past, present and those of you who will lead it in the future

We are in this together.
In monthly small meetings with individual members of our school board to share the concerns and stories of our members

In mobilizing to the monthly school board meetings.... to question the justice of steep increases of district administrator salaries while we struggle to make monthly mortgage and rent payments in an incredibly expensive city

We are in this together

In stepping forward to run for election as your site rep, we are in this together. I am so appreciative to the new reps and to the long-serving stalwarts such as Mark and Pamela who come month after month and year after year

In stepping forward to attend a CTA conference OR even to run for a CTAB Executive Board position next Spring. Why would you do that?

Because we are in this together

To work diligently to work things out between colleagues and your site admin or to help site reps do that as John and Ginger have done, it is a way of showing that

We are in this together

To bring us into the modern world of Social Media, our secretary Enrico collects emails so we can communicate with you and set up an association Face Book page. Why?

Because we are in this together

In building one another up with support rather than tearing colleagues down with gossip, innuendo a cold shoulder or public scorn and disdain, we must raise ourselves to a higher standard BECAUSE we are in this together

We are in this together

To stand up to the bullying behavior of principals WHO disregard the contract or who subjectively evaluate our members.

We need to organize and take a unified stand such as the one taken by members of Piedmont last year who wanted to contribute to the solution for the school they love and to collaborate with admin rather than be ignored and ordered around

They came together because they were in it together

not that long ago, we had an assistant Superintendent who regularly yelled and belittled employees. We lobbied our board members and Superintendent and we helped change that and we need to always work for respectful professional treatment. Why?

Because....

We are in this together

To stand up for better funding for schools here in Berryessa and statewide, walking the 4 corners of Capitol and Berryessa, and beyond, following the lead of a vocal advocate such as Joe Hermann, we are in this together

In the coming months and years, we need to know that we can count on you
...because we are in this together

Whether it be helping to organize colleagues at your site or to share your stories with friends, family or even strangers as on the other end of that dreaded phone bank call....we are in this together

To give meaningful input to ongoing LCAP surveys, we need you to say "better professional pay to attract and retain quality educators", such as all of us, because....we are all in this together

To continue the struggle that continually needs to be done to improve work conditions and a spirit of unity, we need to work together, because, we are in this together!

In the next 11 months of my final term, I am here to serve and to work with you.
You are encouraged and even urged to call me I do this because I believe in you and because....

We are in this together!

An essential part of the associations function is to negotiate a contract. With the retirement of our long serving bargaining chair, Dr Dave Singh last June, we have a new chair. I wish to introduce our new Bargaining Chair, who will introduce her fellow team members. Melanie also serves on the Executive Board as Treasurer where she has been a careful steward of our resources.

Bargaining Chair, Melanie Ontiveros.

CTAB Membership Turns Out

At the November 19th monthly BUSD Board meeting, scores of CTA of Berryessa members were heard.  Although only 8 or so spoke, the solidarity of the rest of the members and our CSEA and Teamster colleagues who stood as each speaker spoke  was a great show of solidarity.  The next school board meeting is scheduled for December 10th.

Good Evening.
On behalf of the 400+ members of the California Teachers Association of Berryessa, I wish to present the proposals our association wishes to negotiate,
In the past 6 years, I and my 3 most recent predecessors as
president have had to see a series of negative impacts on our
members multiple furlough days and a flat cap on benefits
which has led to our members seeing their out of pocket
contributions go up drastically….up to 600 or more dollars per
month.
Many of our members have had to take out loans to keep
afloat. Some have had to take second jobs to make ends meet.
We know that the district wishes to attract and retain quality
teachers. Providing afair and substantial increase in compensation is the best way to do so.
We hope that the recent actions of this board in approving
compensation increases (of 9%+) to unrepresented employees
indicates the acknowledgement that all employees should likewise have their compensation raised similarly.
Thank you.
