I am an Associate Professor of Machine Learning with the Discipline of Business Analytics at the University of Sydney, Australia. My primary research interests lie in machine learning and artificial intelligence, with applications to text analytics and natural language processing. I was a Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney from 2018 to 2021. Prior to joining the University of Sydney, I worked as a Senior Research Scientist at Data61/CSIRO, leading innovative research on a wide range of research projects across various disciplines such as social media monitoring, healthcare, and environmental monitoring. I received the Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), and Bachelor of Engineering and Bachelor of Economics from Xi’an Jiaotong University (XITU), China. I have published 70+ research papers in top-tier conferences and premier journals in the field of data mining and machine learning. I have served as Area Chair, Senior Program Committee, or Program Committee of the major conferences in my area including KDD, NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, AAAI, IJCAI, ICDM, CIKM, etc. I am an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Big Data from 2021.
My main research interests include data mining, machine learning, and AI, with a focus on the following areas:
Graph machine learning
Few-shot and continual learning
Knowledge graphs
Interpretable AI
Social network and social media mining
I have openings for PhD students (2025/2026 in-take) in the field of machine learning, data mining and their application to natural language processing. I am seeking highly motivated PhD students to work with me on these research topics. The requirements of PhD applicants are as follows:
Bachelor or Master degree in Computer Science, Information Engineering, or Business Analytics in well-known universities. Preferences are given to applicants with some research experience in machine learning or large language models.
Good programming skills in at least one mainstream language such as Python and C++.
Good reading/writing skills in English. Preferences are given to applicants who score 6.5+ in IELTS, or equivalent in TOEFL.
