Pre-Dental Timeline

Freshman Year - Fall Semester

· Meet pre-health advisor and investigate pre-health advisory program
· Review the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) book
· Build rapport with your professors and supervisors for future recommendation letters
· Successfully complete first-semester required pre-dental coursework and other degree

requirements

Spring Semester
· Explore the dentistry field – conduct informational interviews, volunteer/intern
· Visit the Career Services Center and identify summer paid/volunteer dental related opportunities
· Successfully complete second-semester required pre-dental coursework and other degree requirements
· Meet with pre-health advisor to discuss pre-dental courses for upcoming semester

Summer
· Complete summer paid/volunteer dental related experience
· Attend summer school, if desired or necessary


Sophomore Year-Fall Semester
· Investigate available volunteer/paid health care related clinical or research activities
· Explore the dentistry field – conduct informational interviews, volunteer/intern
· Review the ADEA book to check each dental school requirements
· Plan when you will take the Dental Admissions Test (DAT)
· Successfully complete required premedical coursework and other degree requirements
· Continue to build rapport with professors and supervisor for future recommendation letters
· Meet with pre-health advisor to discuss pre-health courses for upcoming semester

Spring Semester
· Check in with pre-health advisor and participate in pre-health activities -- like the PRE-DENTAL CLUB!!
· Participate in paid/volunteer dental related clinical or research activities
· Research dental schools
· Identify summer paid/volunteer health care related opportunities
· Successfully complete second-semester required pre-dental coursework and other degree requirements
· Meet with pre-health advisor to discuss pre-dental courses for upcoming semester

Summer
· Complete summer paid/volunteer dental related experience
· Participate in a summer health careers program, if available
· Attend summer school, if desired or necessary


Junior Year-Fall Semester
· Check in with pre-health advisor and participate in pre-health activities -
- like the PRE-DENTAL CLUB!!
· Continue participation in paid/volunteer dental related activities
· Visit Dental Schools
· Request applications from schools not participating in the Associated American Dental Schools Application (AADSAS)
· Review each dental schools admissions timeline located in the ADEA handbook
· Begin preparation and register for desired DAT administration; visit DAT web site for available test dates
· Begin to think about who you will be asking to write your letters of reference.
· Successfully complete first-semester required pre-dental coursework and other degree requirements
· Meet with pre-health advisor to discuss pre-dental courses for upcoming semester

Spring Semester
· Take the DAT
· Start filling out the AADSAS application online
· Research and visit dental schools and develop your target list
· Attend Statement of Purpose Workshop presented by the Career Services Center
· Meet with a career counselor/advisor to review and critique your personal statement
· Collect Letters of Reference
· Successfully complete required premedical coursework and other degree requirements
· Meet with pre-health advisor to discuss pre-dental courses for upcoming semester

Summer
· Participate in a summer health careers program, if available
· Submit AADSAS application in the beginning of June
· Submit your letters of reference
· Attend summer school, if desired or necessary
· Take DAT if you haven’t done so during the Spring semester
· Meet with a career counselor/advisor to practice interviewing skills and techniques
· Research financial aid options


Senior Year-Fall Semester
· Continue participation in paid/volunteer health care related activities
· Prepare for your interviews
· Research dental schools to which you are applying; Read published literature
· Keep abreast of current dentistry issues -- try looking at our dental articles section.
· Research financial aid options online and in the ADEA handbook
· Successfully complete elective science and non-science coursework and other degree requirements
· Meet with pre-health advisor to discuss pre-dental courses for upcoming semester

Spring Semester
· Make interim and final decisions about dental school choice
· Immediately notify the dental schools that you will not be attending
· Successfully complete elective science and non-science coursework and other degree requirements
· Graduate!

Summer
· Prepare for dental school enrollment: purchase books and equipment and make appropriate living arrangements
· Relax and prepare for dental school
· Attend orientation programs and matriculate in dental school.
