  • Silent Auction at Conference

It is time to start thinking about the silent auction for CSTAND this year! We would love to have you contribute. Think of donating some homemade canned goods, a Friday night movie basket (with movies and snacks), a wine basket, a book basket, a self-care package (lotion, bottle of wine, bubble bath, and a book), or even a piece of art. All money from the silent auction goes to fund CSTAND scholarships. If you have questions, please contact Kim Weismann at kim.weismann@willistonstate.edu.

A message from CSTAND about All State and other awards

As you are preparing for regionals and state, remember to register your qualifying students for the CSTAND ALL STATE AWARD.

Please remember you, or another coach from your school, within these activities, need to be a member of CSTAND for you student to be eligible since these are awards given from the CSTAND organization. Have the coach who is a member file the application. It is always a good idea, once you submit your applications for All State, to send message to your rep to make sure they receive it.

If you have any issues registering your students or understanding the criteria please contact either Adam Pankow or Jeff West (contact info below.)

Check out the website for other awards which are available. All award nominations are live and available for nominations. Don't forget nominating your students for scholarships. They have to be attending a ND College or University to be eligible for the scholarship.

The following two pieces of information missed the last newsletter and have time sensitive information. We are sending them as a service through our CSTAND email list.

    Hello Fantastic Speech Coaches,

You are receiving this email because we want to invite you to a POI Workshop to be held at Jamestown Middle School (which is at 203 2nd Ave SE).  POI (Program Oral Interp) is a category that is being piloted by the NDHSAA this year, and we want you to have the tools and know-how to get your students excited about this new event!  While the event is not official yet, and students won’t be able to state qualify in it, tournament managers have the option of running the event at their meets.

Kelsey Johnson, head speech coach at WF Sheyenne, will be leading the workshop.  Last year, two of her students participated in the National Speech and Debate Association District Qualifier and one advanced to the National Tournament in Salt Lake City.  The NSDA/NFL isn’t the only program that runs POI as it is also a popular event on the college circuit!  She will focus on the rules, the “layout,” topic selection, theme and thesis suggestions, and the cutting process during this workshop.  Kelsey will also bring along some examples, and, hopefully, a student to perform a POI.

Students and coaches are all invited to Jamestown Middle School.  Please RSVP to Laura Weis, the gracious workshop host, by November 23rd, 2016.  The workshop will take place from 5:30 to 7:30pm on Tuesday, December 6th.  We recommend you bring along a notebook or computer/tablet, something to write with, some possible ideas, your questions, and an awesome energy!

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Kelsey at kelseyjohnson@west-fargo.k12.nd.us or Laura at laura.weis@k12.nd.us

We look forward to seeing you at Jamestown Middle School on December 6th

    Best of luck this season,

    Kelsey Johnson & Laura Weis

Subject: Free Speech & Debate Resources!

    Good afternoon,

The National Speech & Debate Association is the leading developer of speech and debate resources, competitive standards, and curricular tools. We are home to the only national forensic honor society for middle and high school students and we are the hosts of the largest academic competition in the world.

To introduce you to who we are and what we do, we want to send you a free download of two resources:

Teacher in a Box is our collection of lesson plans designed to help introduce students to debate. We'll send you the introductory lesson plan for free!

You'll also receive Tips for Writing a Persuasive Speech, which walks students through writing and outlining a three minute persuasive speech.

Opt in to our mailing list using the link below to receive these resources and more like them!

Then we'll see you in your inbox just once a month, with a few extra resources and updates in the lead up to the celebration of National Speech & Debate Education Day on March 3.
