C-Skimmers

C-skimmer is the only wind powered electric generator that fits below the roof line making it easier to qualify for a permit in most cities. The fairing shields the turbine blades that are moving into the wind to eliminate drag and the upswept design adds to the thrust and aids in low wind starting at the same time.

Designer Michael Culhane came up with the idea that the design should start from the shape of the house. The fairing in this design cleverly hides most of the turbine blades from the view on the ground.

If mid roof mounted the C-skimmer can be added to an existing house. It is perfect for coastal locations with a consistent prevailing wind direction and does not require the breeze to be directly in front of it but will accept a fairly wide range of variable degrees off center. If permitting allowed that it could be mounted at the very top of the roof, it would work with 75% of wind directions.

In the beginning you can start with one unit, or gain optimum efficiency by simply adding as many units as will fit on your roof line. All C-skimmers link together to power the single generator on the end.

The C-skimmers are made from light weight aluminum and can be color anodized to match any roof top. As seen from the ground, only the tops of the blades are visible. In future models these blades will be made of a clear plastic like material to make the C-skimmer invisable from the ground and there are also other design upgrades planned.

The maintenance is no more time consuming then an air-conditioner. The turbine has engineered crease design and then reinforced with stainless steel exterior spokes, like a bicycle wheel, but inside out.

The C-skimmer is bird friendly and the broad blades provide a lot of torque at a low rpm which keeps it quiet.

One 6 foot unit puts out 315 watts in a 9mph wind.

You can simply link many C-skimmers together with just one generator at the end.

We are looking for residential home architects that would be interested in designing a much more efficient modified version of this turbine directly into the roof section of a new home.
