Facts on Caregivers

1/3 of people will become Caregivers in their lifetime.

1/2 of these Caregivers are full or part-time workers.

Research shows that Caregiving impacts a person’s life including:

  • financial costs
  • exclusion and discrimination at work
  • social isolation
  • poor health through stress and physical injury

Research also shows that 1/2 of these Caregivers are effectively excluded from other paid employment through the heavy demand and responsibilities of caring for a vulnerable relative or friend.

65 million Caregivers in USA, and expected to rise dramatically with our aging population, referred to as the ‘Silver Tsunami.’ AARP, 2013

Financial Value of Caregivers

Congressional Budget Office estimated the economic value of caregiving for older persons in 2011 to be $234 billion.

This estimate vastly exceeds the total amount of paid care from all sources (Medicaid, Medicare, private pay and others) for both institutional care ($134 billion) and home and community-based services ($58 billion).  AARP, 2013
