  • Nelson Mandela Nelson Mandela, 1918-2013   “We can build a society grounded on friendship and our common humanity – a society founded on tolerance. That is the only road open to us. Let us join hands and march into the future.”   Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, of the Madiba clan of the Thembu tribe, joined the African National Congress in 1944 to violently oppose apartheid policies in South Africa.
