These web-archives  present the gist of the Durgabai Deshmukh Memorial Lectures (DDMLs). Initiated in 1992 by the Council for Social Development, the DDMLs focus on social development challenges facing the nation.

Between 1963 and 1969,   an informal study group of social workers and social scientists, bound by a common interest in working towards a just social order in India, organised a number of consultations and seminars on pressing social and developmental issues. The group was led by  Dr. Durgabai Deshmukh, the eminent sociologist and social worker. This was the genesis of the CSD - the Council for Social Development. In 1964, a formal status was given to the Council as an affiliate study group of the India International Centre, and in April 1970, it was registered under the Societies Registration Act of 1860 with Dr. C.D. Deshmukh as President and his wife, Dr. Durgabai Deshmukh, in the Executive Chair.

CSD is today one of the leading institutions working in the area of development research in India. Apart from having carried out out pioneering research on developmental issues and concerns, the Council has played an influential role in voicing social concerns among planners and policy-makers through-out the forty-nine years of its existence.

Every year, the Council invites a speaker to deliver the Durgabai Deshmukh Memorial Lecture. The gist of those lectures are profiled here on this website.
