5E Lesson series: Carbon dioxide levels

Focus Lessons: SEP4 Analyzing and interpreting data  and SEP3 Planning and carrying out investigations

This material will be presented as part of a unit for Chemistry of the Earth System, however we are going to provide several ideas for modifications to incorporate the lessons into a middle school unit or the other high school courses.

Agenda:

9:00-9:30 Brief overview of the lesson seriesQuickwrite

 5E Lesson flow

Engage/explore:
Exploring CO2 Levels using Mauna Loa data

Explore/explain:
NASA "A year in the life of Earth's CO2",Connecting these levels visually and beginning to explain what it is that we see and what it means

Elaborate:
Tree Calculations and CO2 absorbing reactions- where will all that CO2 go?

Evaluate:
Class presentations of elaborate work

9:30-10:30                               Focus Lesson 1a: Mauna Loa data analysis using CSCS  (Jeannie)
Focus Lesson1b: CO2 Data mining (Dorothy)
 10:30-10:45      De-brief Lesson 1
How can we incorporate this into other courses?
What tools/resources would we need to implement this in the classroom?
