From Nanos To MetCons. Find The Best Shoes For Your Next WOD

There are two different types of CrossFit Shoes-

The Weight Lifters and The All Around Shoes-

Let's dive into what makes each type of fitness shoe ideal for their particular uses

YouTube Video

Weight Lifting Shoes- these shoes are used primarily on your heavy lifting days when you are doing Olympic style lifts like squats, dead lifts and other Olympic style, multi joint movements.  There are a few characteristics of these shoes that separates them from their all around counterparts.

Reebok CF lifter shoes on Rogue Fitness

·         Elevated Heel- the elevated heel allows you greater range of motion to get deeper in your squats, you have greater range of motion in your ankles and greater movement in your knees, all which equate to a stronger squat game. Having an elevated heel will see great improvements for people who suffer from tight hips, joints or ankles.

·         Super Hard Sole- Along with the elevated heel the super hard sole plays an ultra important role in making these types of shoes great for lifting heavy and keeping you safe.  Let’s say you are a 200 pound man.  You are squatting 300 pounds.  Your body, and thus your shoes have to bear the load of 500 pounds of pressure being exerted on it during that movement.  When you are squatting you are trying to generate as much power or force to be transferred to allow the rep to go to completion.  Well, spongy or highly cushioned shoes are the enemy.  If you have ever tried lifting in running shoes, you will notice that you sink into tht cushioning.  Well that cushioning is the enemy as it zaps that force you are exerting right out of your movement. So, don’t lift with running shoes that have an elevated heel to toe ratio as the padding will most likely cause you to sink into it, running the risk of throwing you off balance, injuring yourself or others… or worst of all- not completing that rep.

·         A funny gait when you try to walk heel to toe.  Seriously its like trying to walk in ski boots.

These shoes are great performers for just about all of your WOD, sans any type of running.  We always have two pairs of shoes, our lifters and our general shoes so that we have the right tools for the job.

All Around Fitness Shoes- When you think of CF shoes you think of Reebok Nanos, you think of Innov-8, and Nike MetCon1. Before we dive into these shoes, I thought I should provide a bit of background information on the CrossFit scene as it stands now.  Reebok the official sponsor of the “Games” has exclusive rights to naming shoes in the CF brand. That’s why you only see Reebok with the Term “Crossfit” at the end of their shoe model. Example CF Nano 5.0.  Just like The NFL only allows Bose Headphones to be worn because of sponsorship deals, (think Beats being worn by hundreds of players) Reebok as the official sponsor of the Games only allows their shoes to be worn in open competition. Reebok also has the most high profile athletes under individual contract with them.  Competitors like Rich Froning, who are popular in social media as a result of their amazing performances at the games. These types of shoes are leaders in their niche because of a few common characteristics.

Reebok

·         Wide Toe Boxes- allows for the athlete to gain better control, stability and safety by spreading their toes out.

·         Durability- even more so than their OL counter parts, these all around shoes are typically endowed with some sort of anti rope burn protection.  We all know that the greatest destroyer of our shoes is ropes and rope climbs. From the climb up to the descent down, topes really can tear your shoes apart.

·         Minimalism- the minimalist movement is in full effect at Boxes all across the world.  All the most popular shoes feature either “zero drop” or a very, very small heel to toe ratio drop.

Olympic Lifting Shoe Reviews-

Now that we have defined “what is an Olympic lifting shoe”, we should probably let you know what the most popular shoes are for lifting Olympic style.

Nike Romaleos 2 Weightlifting shoe-

Nike Romaleos Weight Lifting Shoes Olympic Style

Description per Rogue Fitness-

Nike improved this high end weightlifting shoe by shaving 50 grams off the weight and increasing the forefoot flex.

Exclusive Nike contoured TPU heel wedge cups heel and supports foot to provide unmatched lifting stability

Integrated lacing and double power straps lock foot firmly in place

Supportive, durable upper materials and construction

Outsole designed to minimize wear in the heel

One of the most challenging shoes to build for Beijing, the Nike Romaleos is a lightweight, flexible workhorse that can withstand the unique punishment that weightlifters put on their footwear. In a world championship event where a 300-pound man might lift 700 pounds, shoes play a critical role in an athlete's performance and safety. The most revolutionary innovation in the Nike Romaleos weightlifting shoe is Nike's exclusive Power Bridge, a contoured TPU heel wedge designed to support the foot and bear as much weight as a man can lift, without any compression or give. This technology provides a lightweight alternative to the wooden heel wedge that competitors have been using since the 1960s. The Power Bridge is also a technical advancement because, unlike a flat wood shim, it is contoured to cup the heel, providing stability and comfort under stress. The honeycomb-like system of trusses and bridges in the midsole has been engineered for ultimate strength, helping to ensure that an athlete's weight stays forward during the intense jerking and lifting motion of competition. A first in Nike footwear design, heel heights have been graded to different elevations for the varying sizes and weight classes of Olympic athletes. This unique system is well-protected by a flat rubber outsole specially designed to minimize wear in the heel.

The upper is constructed from durable synthetic materials that are ultra-supportive with integrated lacing and two large hook and loop fasteners that keep the foot locked in place. Inside, elastic has been added to the top of the shoe to flex with the tendons of the foot during the snapping triple extension movement of clean and jerk lifting. The Nike Romaleos comes with two different sock-liners: a softer insert for training and a harder version for competition, when athletes benefit most from zero deflection as power is transferred through the foot.
