CROOK TURN THE HEAT-ON - FOR 75 MINUTES

posted 9 Aug 2015, 12:43 by Neil Gibson   [ updated 9 Aug 2015, 12:47 ]

This was the first Northern League encounter for the two teams since the 1951-52 season, a  Crook home game played at Willington because of drainage problems at the Millfield.
Both teams started in express fashion, the first shot in anger was by Wright from the left but the ball went well passed Graham's left hand post.
It was Crook's turn for a breakaway from defence as a Watkinson pass found Brown who's shot on the run hit the side netting. The game was then a furious end to end encounter but the Crook mid-field were slowly winning the battle and were now in control of the game.
Crook took the lead after 10 minutes when Peter Brown, a constant menace to the Heaton defence broke free, his shot hitting Rule's right hand post, the assistant Ref ruling the ball had crossed the line.     The game was now end to end,Wright broke free on the left but his shot hit the outside of the post.
A great cross from Turnbull found  Duggan free at Rule's right hand post but he headed the ball into the ground, the ball ballooning over the bar. A dazzling run by Watkinson set up Brown but with the goal at his mercy his hurried shot went well wide. Heaton were desperately defending giving away free kicks but the ever alert Wright broke free his shot parried by Graham.
The home side ended the half well in command and with composure in front of goal could have had a three goal lead.
The second half started at a furious pace, Burns shooting wide after a left wing cross, a Brown pass found Brazaukes whose rasping shot was well held by Rule with two Crook players on hand ready for a tap-in.Crook doubled their lead, one of many free kicks was headed away to the foot of Smith who gave Rule no chance with a well timed lob.                                                                                                         Heaton sub Quine was having more influence on the game and a great through ball to Stoddart had Kemp making a captains "take no prisoners" tackle to send the ball into touch.
Brazaukus was then brought down with a crunching tackle, the free kick headed away for a corner.
The game was now end to end, the first booking of the season to Wear who was having a  frustrating time against Brown,   Heaton beginning to argue amongst themselves.
Graham made two great saves, one he parried  the second  pushed around his right hand post. He then pushed yet another Wright shot passed his post.
Crook made a double substitution and seemed to lose their shape, Heaton piling on the pressure,  pulling a goal back as a Wright centre found Bright who's shot beat Graham.
Sub Quine was now controlling the game and it was "Squeaky bum time" for the Crook faithful.
After a breakaway by Crook, Brown beat the defence his pass finding Lough who took one touch too many losing the chance of a shot.
A home win looked shattered when a cross from Wright found Deagle who gave Graham no chance with a crisp shot but he was ruled offside.
Wright had a shot saved by Ryan's legs as pressure ensued but the Crook defence held firm for a great win for the home side, two tired sides left the field in what was a thrilling encounter.

Crook team. Graham, McVickers, Wilson, Johnson, Kemp, Smith, Turnbull, Watkinson, Brown, Duggan, Brazaukus. Subs Lough for Johnson   Moody & Dunn for Smith & Duggan
