Health Literacy and Cancer Prevention:
Do People Understand What They Hear?

This 5-year study was a core project of the CRN 3. The multi-disciplinary team includes investigators from five CRN sites and external collaborators.
Using a careful test development process, the team developed a pair of complementary tests to measure adults’ comprehension of both spoken and written messages related to cancer prevention and screening.

Over 1,000 health plan members from four CRN sites completed the two new health literacy tests and a variety of other measures. These data, in conjunction with clinical data extracted from the CRN’s virtual data warehouse, provide the foundation for a series of studies exploring the relationship between health literacy and cancer prevention.
