Philmont 2011

Crew 6194 received TWO  crew slots for an expedition to the famous Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico for 2011. Our trip ran from July 25 to August 8, 2011. We will flew to Albuquerque where we spent a few days sighteseeing and getting acclimated to the altitude. We toured Old Town Santa Fe, hiked at Bandelier National Monument, rafted rafting on the Rio Grande River. From there we headed to Philmont for  a 12-day backpacking trip through the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

The Philmont Scout Ranch is 214 square miles of rugged New Mexico wilderness outside of the historic town of Cimarron in northeastern New Mexico. This BSA National High Adventure Base offers backcountry programs like rock climbing, fly fishing, black powder rifles, wilderness medicine, mountain man living, and gold panning. Crew 6194 members climbed mountain peaks as high as 12,441 feet above sea level, shot black powder rifles and learned rock climbing. One crew used a Philmont burro to carry some of their gear for a few days and both crews emphasized Leave No Trace camping principles during their treks.Venturers carried all of their food, personal and crew equipment in packs that weighed an average of about 40 to 45 pounds. Each crew followed an itinerary that included programs, staffed camps, and backcountry destinations of their choice.
