Father Henry worked on farms as labourer or horseman. During 1911 the family lived in Rayne Road Bocking while Walter worked as a Brass & Steel polisher.
The 205th Siege Battery sailed for Salonika during 1916 and later moved to Palestine. Kantara is based at the Sinai, Egypt border at this indicates Walter most likely died in hospital either from wounds or disease.

Father a farm labourer as was Bertie in 1911. By his death his address was given as 12 Slavin Street, Clapham.
Presumed dead during the German counter attacks at The Battle of Cambrai.

Enlisted in the 1/5th Essex Regiment May/June 1915 and arrived in Egypt 10th December 1915. He became a driver at an unknown date with the Royal Engineers and was drowned on the 15th March 1919.
On census returns the name appears to be 'Drury' while the army records say 'Drory.'

His original number indicates enlisting August/September 1914 yet he does not have the '15 Star. Was there a reason he did not follow when the battalion sailed to Gallipoli in 1915?

Born in Rivenhall to Thomas and Emma Joslin in 1887. Father an agricultural labourer and William began work also on the land, by 1911 he was a horseman at Links Farm, Cressing.

3rd battle of Gaza. A wide attack covering the ground from Gaza to Beersheba began early on the morning of October the twenty seventh 1917 when the Cavalry led the attack on Beersheba. Early on the morning of the seventh XXI Corps, including the 1/5th Essex, attacked the Turkish trench system in Gaza from their base along the shore of the Mediterranean. Fighting began at 03.00 hours on the morning of the 3rd November with the 1/5th attacking from the beach against the formidable 'Rafa Redoubt' and 'Zowaid Trench.' The shell fire, mist, smoke and dust from the beach caused much confusion including a mix up re the target attacked. Somewhere during this attack, fighting against stiff opposition 30 year old William Walter Joslin received the wound from which he died.
LATHAM, CARL STANLEY.M.M. Serjeant 3286 London Regiment (London Scottish). 1st/14th Bn. 168th Brigade in 56th (London) Div. Died: 01/07/1916 Awards: Military Medal. THIEPVAL MEMORIAL. Born Walthamstow 1897, father Ernest Henry, mother Mary Louise, one sister Kathleen Mary Stanley. Father a timber merchant. By 1911 the family lived at Cressing while Carl attended Felsted school. Father died 1915 aged 45. Address given as 20, Boundaries Mansions, Balham in 1916.
Why did he join London Scottish? Enlisted between September and October 1914, entered war 5th May 1915 still only 17. Killed in action Gommecourt (Somme) on the 1st July 1916 aged 18. Awaiting commission he was posted to lead his platoon on July 1st and in a difficult position he led his men until shot in the head. Awarded the Military Medal.
MOSS, GEORGE. Gunner 2123. Royal Garrison Artillery. 20th Siege Bty. 1 Corps HA 1st Army. Died: 25/09/1915 Age: 39. HOP STORECEMETERY, Ypres. Son of George and Sarah Moss, of Witham Road, Cressing, Essex.
George enlisted in the RGA at great Yarmouth 3rd September 1901. 7 years service and 5 in reserve. Several times fell foul of army discipline. Re-enlisted RGA 7th September 1914. 6inch, 8 inch and 9.2 inch howitzers mostly used. The battery arrived in France June 1915. Died of wounds same day as Bombardier William James Powell, both hit by artillery shell, dying at No 18 Field Ambulance.

Joined the 1st Battalion Essex Regiment and was with them in India during 1911. Entered war 25th April 1914 when the regiment arrived at Gallipoli. Regarded as having died on 6th Aug 1915.

SUTTON, FRANK. Corporal 7811. Essex Regiment. 2nd Bn.12th Brigade, 4th Division. Died: 13/05/1915. Age 27. YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL. Born 1887 Cressing. Like father Alfred he was a farm labourer.
Was with the 1st Essex Battalion in India during 1911. As a reservist he returned to the regiment with the Home Based Essex 2nd Battalion and went to France with them on 22nd August 1914. Killed in action at St Jean during 2nd Battle of Ypres.
Effects £21/14/1d. War Gratuity £6. Paid to mother sole leg.
Awarded British & Victory Medals and also the 1914 Star.

Pathfinder was sunk off St. Abbs Head, Berwickshire, Scotland, on Saturday 5 September 1914 by the German U-21, commanded by Kapitänleutnant Otto Hersing. Typical of the scout cruisers' poor endurance, she was so short of coal while on patrol that she could only manage a speed of 5 knots, making her an easy target. The ship was struck in a magazine, which exploded, causing the ship to sink within minutes with the loss of 259 men. HMS "Pathfinder"

Born Cressing 1885 to Alfred & Mahelia Tokley. Stockman on farm at 15 but by 1911 he is married to Edith and living with one child Elsie Irene in Brentwood. On December 11th 1915 by which time the family were joined by Lillian Georgina he enlisted in the Royal garrison Artillery while 30 years of age. Qualified as a signaller on the 10 of November 1916 and was posted to France on 28th March 1917. Died in hospital from gunshot wounds to head and shoulders 26th July 1917. Edith his wife was awarded 22/11d a week pension for herself and two children.
The British Army was about to launch another large offensive, that would in time be called the Third Battle of Ypres, more commonly as Passchendaele. The Battery would once again be part of the enormous array of artillery firing the preliminary barrage. The initial targets were in the Sanctuary Wood – Shrewsbury Forest area, and the second line objective at Lower Star Post and the surrounding rear areas. The bombardment opened on 23 July 1917and continued without a break – even though under regular enemy counter battery fire – until the infantry attack went in on 31 July 1917. The Long, Long Trail

THIEPVAL MEMORIAL. Son of James and Editha Watson, of "Side View", Braintree Rd., Cressing, Braintree, Essex. Born Hanwell son of a police sergeant. Possibly living in London when enlisting. It could be his parents James and Editha Watson moved to Cressing after his death.
Served 2/7th Middlesex 1/9/15 - 8/5/16 & 15/5/16 - 2/7/16. 1/5th London 3/7/15 - 9/10/16. Entered war 1/9/15 should have '15 Star?' First served in Egypt then France. Death at the Somme presumed.

Born Great Maplestead in 1925 Claude found himself aboard a 'B' Class escort destroyer, employed as a cook when he was only 19 years of age.
In preparation for Operation Overlord, the invasion of Normandy, she was transferred to Portsmouth where she escorted convoys arriving in England as well as the convoys across the Channel. Boadicea was sunk on 13 June off Portland Bill by two torpedoes dropped by Junkers Ju 88 medium bombers while escorting a convoy of merchant ships to France. The torpedoes caused a magazine explosion and Boadicea sank quickly, with only 12 of her crew of 182 surviving. HMS "Boadicea"
