Creative Writing Contests
Essay, Poetry, Short Story, and Short Short Story competitions

Word & Sound International - 2 0 1 0

The Poets have spoken. The 2008 competitions sported 21 subjects, styles, and forms. The 2009 competitions narrowed that down to 15. Obviously that was not narrow enough so in 2010, there are 8 subjects, any style, any form, including an all-inclusive “other” subject. We hope all poets and writers will have more fun with less to think about. Subjects for 2010 include:

1.      Aging Gracefully (or Not).

2.     Death & Dying (including honor to a deceased loved one; loved one being a person (mom/dad), place (WTC, bridge), thing/idea (small town America, downtown), species (pets, animals in the wild), etc.).

3.     Earth, Nature, Seasons.

4.     Relationships (includes chants or rants about male/female, parent/child, BFF friendship, courtship/breaking up, marriage/divorce, animals/pets, etc.).

5.     Special Days (anniversary, birthday, holiday, retirement, wedding, labor day (or Labor Day), surgery day, etc.).

6.     Spiritual, Uplifting, Religious.

7.     Witty, Whimsical, Humorous, Satirical.

8.     All other subjects.

Start thinking of all those subjects you want to express yourself about and start writing now.  Don’t wait until the day before the deadline and say, “Oh, shoot! I forgot!” Do it now. Read it over. Make your corrections. Have it ready or send it in. The next competition opens as soon as the current one closes.

New this year is no restrictions on the number of entries one may submit in the same category. Yes, you may enter more than one Poem in the same category if you would like to compete with yourself, increasing your chances at winning. There are also no restrictions on the number of submissions for Essays, Short Stories, or Short-short Stories. In these trying historic and economic times, even non-writers should have a lot to say.

Thanks for your participation and your generous support of poets and writers, and arts and culture.

about the Albert Anthony Foundation (AAF)

Founded to honor Albert Anthony (1880-1959), the Mississippi born and bred farmer/entrepreneur, one of the wealthiest multiracial/multicultural land owners in his time who donated parcels of land and monetary funding to area schools and churches.  In addition to his 5 daughters, 4 sons, and 14+ grandchildren (not all of which were born upon his death) who have perpetuated the Anthony Family, AAF was developed to commemorate his existence and salute his philanthropy. The mission of the Albert Anthony Foundation for Cultural Arts, Grants, & Scholarships is “Supporting mentorship endeavors that promote an equitable and sustainable society; promoting literacy and lifelong learning; expanding the horizons of cultural artistry through awareness, determination, drive, and opportunity; catering to the untapped, unharnessed cultural energy of disadvantaged and at-risk individuals/families; transforming the culturally void community into a cultural arts Mecca; and exposing its general public to limitless cultural possibilities.”
