Strategies

OSEL-supported strategies are all evidence based and intended to reach all students from a Multi-Tiered System of Supports.

School Climate Strategies

Classroom Climate Strategies

CHAMPS and DSC (Discipline in the Secondary Classroom) - Classroom Management

DSC is the high school version of the strategy, designed to help 9th-12th grade teachers develop effective classroom management plans. More on CHAMPS More on DSC
Coaching Classroom Management
Coaching Classroom Management is designed to give administrators the tools and strategies they need for observations and effective coaching on classroom climate.

Social Emotional Learning Strategies

Second Step and Lion's Quest - Social Emotional Learning
Second Step and Lion's Quest are evidence-based social-emotional learning curricula designed to help students succeed both socially and academically. Studies show that children with stronger social-emotional skills perform better in school. These curricula teach skills for learning, empathy, emotion management and problem solving -- tools that students need both inside and outside the classroom.

Interventions

EBBS: Evidence-Based Behavioral Strategies
EBBS provides school staff with the tools to design, implement and evaluate customized individual interventions in the classroom setting. Early-stage strategies address both common student behavioral distractions, as well as more challenging and disruptive behaviors.
Anger Coping and Think First
Anger Coping and Think First prepares elementary and high school clinicians to provide small group cognitive behavioral interventions to students demonstrating difficulties managing their anger in appropriate ways.
Cognitive Behavioral Interventions for Trauma in Schools (CBITS)
CBITs is an evidence-based cognitive behavioral intervention that targets symptoms of exposure to violence and trauma demonstrated by students. The strategy is designed to be provided by licensed clinical providers to small groups of students.
Behavior Education Program (BEP) Check In/Check Out
The BEP is a school-based program for providing daily support and monitoring for students who are at risk for developing serious or chronic problem behaviors. It is based on a daily check-in/check-out system that provides each student with immediate feedback on his or her behavior (via a teacher rating on a Daily Progress Report) and increased positive adult attention.
Restorative Practices
Restorative Practices are ways of thinking about and responding to issues and problems by involving all participants to identify what happened, describe how it affected everyone, and find solutions to make things better. One form of Restorative Practice is Restorative Justice. Two forms of Restorative Justice, detailed below, are currently available to CPS School:
  • Peer Council: School based Peer Council is a process through which a small group of student council members under the supervision of trained adult advisers review the misconduct of their peers. They work with the Referred Student to address all aspects of the situation in an effective manner.
  • Peace Circles: Peace Circles use traditional circle ritual and structure to involve the harmed person, the referred student, other effected community members and a trained Circle Keeper to promote healing for all affected parties.
