Breastfeeding: Best for Moms, Best for Babies, Best for our Community.

Breastfeeding is the healthiest choice for feeding babies1-3.  With a foundation of ideal nourishment, babies in our community can be better prepared to grow into healthy children and adults.  The good news is that most moms in Cowlitz County want to breastfeed their babies, and are attempting to do so.  However, while experts agree that babies should be breastfeed for at least one year, most babies in Cowlitz County are not breastfed past 4 weeks4.  Why aren’t Cowlitz County moms nursing their babies longer?

There are a lot of barriers that stand in the way of breastfeeding for the first full year: returning to work, difficulty with breastfeeding, lack of support, and others5.  Fortunately, there are resources available in our community to help moms and their babies overcome these barriers.  If you are a breastfeeding mom, a community health or service provider, or a local employer, please explore this site to learn more about the resources and tools available to support breastfeeding moms in Cowlitz County.
