Global Health and Sustainability (HE 255)
Important Notice-This site will only be used for the websites & presentation resources. Due to moving the course online the list of what to do in the Section below is NOT CORRECT and should be ignored-find what you need to do by in weeks TO DO LIST in Moodle. We will still use this site, but look for those directions in the moodle week they will be needed.
HE 255-GLOBAL HEALTH AND SUSTAINABILITY
This website is specifically for the Global Health and Sustainability course (HE 255) at Lane Community College, in Eugene, Oregon. If you are not a current or past student, feel free to check out some of the websites and info. to educate yourself on the important issues we cover in this Global Health and Sustainability class.
Students: Although this is not an online course, we will be using this website and the free resources on it, so please read carefully and thoroughly for best results!
The objective of this site is to be a gathering place of resources for use in learning, that are freely available on the internet related to Global Health and wellbeing, the Economy, Sustainability and Social Justice. It is growing in size each term because so many good and caring people across many disciplines and within a variety of cultures and walks of life are interested in ensuring the healthy future of a diverse, just and inclusive humanity and the planet, ecosystems, biodiversity that we cannot survive without. Albert Einstein has been quoted as saying the following two profound statements that we must allow to guide us on this earth walk because they hold the keys to what so many indigenous peoples have been trying to tell us..
"Imagination is more important than knowlege" Albert Einstein
Imagination must first be present to believe that our actions and solutions can lead to what we want and need. The key to change is first to have the imagination to see that we can have something that is healthier, more sustainable and humane and the steadfast belief that WE CAN ACT individually and with others to make it so!)-Susie Cousar
"We cannot solve the problems of today using the same thinking that created them" Albert Einstein
We must think outside of our acculturation of human dominance over everything and each other through the hierarchy/social stratification/competition mindset and the endless pursuit of power through greed/money, in order to see what we are losing and the catastrophic consequences of our denial of this truth. - Susie Cousar

Section one=IMPORTANT REMINDERS AND ORGANIZING TOOLS; READ THIS BY WEEK ONE:
for online-zoom course follow MOODLE INSTRUCTIONS!
The below information is outdated and the class is online/hybrid now, please go to moodle for the correct TO DO LIST!
Get your book and read as much of it as possible ASAP. Skim read all chapters first and then peruse (read deeply) the first 5 chapters by week 2 and the rest by the beginning of week 3.
Mandatory Packet Readings/Media- begins starting week 3 for the rest of the term, follow this link to find them.
Check your Lane GMail Account frequently- This term I have chosen not to have a packet for the class to lower student costs and instead I will be assigning articles that I can find for free for each of the areas beyond week 1-3 that we will cover-check out the syllubus located in the in the bottom (documents section of this page) to see those areas and by week 3 or sooner, I will begin sending out reminders about which readings and or media/films I will be assigning for you. All of our tests will be based on these readings/films and in class films. Test reviews will be available at least a week in advance of the test to help you study for the quiz, test one and the final.
Read the Volunteer Service Learning document below (documents section at bottom-word doc) and check out the service agencies/choices you have-contact or pick one (if it's walk in) and once you have the information you need and no later than the end of week 4 write down your name and the place you will be going and turn it in to me on a small/sustainable piece of paper ASAP.
If you don't get this piece of paper telling me where you will be going (after setting things up with the agency unless it's a walk in place like Grassroots Garden or Lane CC's Learning Garden) in by the last day of week 4 you will get 10 points off of your service learning total of 100 points. It would be better if you got this in to me in the first 2 weeks of class!
Please find the study guide document for our book at the bottom of this page where the "documents" section is located (alphabetized too) and answer at least one question from each chapter and bring your answers (be sure they are on a separate piece of paper from the study guide) and the study guide to class on week 2, you will not be turning in your answers. This will help for the class discussion on week 2 and it will help you with your understanding of the book's concepts and prepare you for the test's and quiz later.
Note: The gender section of this older text will be updated with a couple of articles that will address/acknowlege non-binary gender identity and pronouns and we will still include in our discussions the subject of sexism within the M/F binary as well (Binary:something having two parts).
Also, many of the articles on this site are updates to the book information as well, but much of the info. in this older text is still as relevant and important today as it was when it was first published. I will continue to add new articles to support your learning throughout the term.
Read about the Article Reviews, film reviews and other class projects in section two below called Graded Assignments for this class with instructions!
Read about the Web Research and Review Project (https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid=sites&srcid=ZGVmYXVsdGRvbWFpbnxjb3VzYXJzfGd4OjIzZTQ3ODFkMDZlNjIyYzc )- this will help you understand the project which is due by week 6. This is worth a lot of points and since it's a pretty easy project overall, I'm picky about the sustainable formatting. You will be using this formatting on all typed assignments that you choose to type (only extra credit and web reviews is mandatory for typing). It will lower your stress level if you choose not to procrastinate on this-if the formatting or printing seems difficult to figure out come to my office by at least the week before the deadline so I can show you how to do this-points will be deducted for those who choose to "whine" about the details (but didn't get help) at the time of turn in-so you can prevent the whine by getting help in advance if needed (:.
REMINDERS:
Please keep all returned homework available, just in case I accidentally forget or make a mistake on your grade for an assignment (which I've been known to do from time to time :o), I will need this for proof that you actually did turn it in and I did give you the grade that you are saying you got!
Turning in papers after class: You can turn in assignments at the Health/PE office (5/205) but DO NOT use the stamp machine outside the office, have one of the people, Paula hand stamp the time date and put it in my mailbox. This is the date I will be looking for in terms of whether or not it is considered "on time" or "late".
