Avian fece, aka "Bird shit"
Avian fece, aka "Bird shit"
Birds have a unique tract called a vent or cloaca which combines the excretory functions of urinary and solid waste and reproduction. Birds mate through a "cloacal kiss." The white stuff you see represents what we would identify in human as urine, while the darker matter represents the solid waste. Coccidioidomycosis also known as "Valley Fever" or "San Joaquin Valley Fever" is a fungal disease infecting the lungs and is found in California's San Joaquin Valley soil, and in Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico. It can be spread by birds' fece. The fungus Coccidioides immitis is causative, and resides in the dusty, arid soil of the American desert southwest, where approximately 3% of residents develop the acute form of the disease in any given year by inhaling the airborne spores. Most often, the majority of those infected with the disseminated form recover without even knowing they were infected. "Zoonosis" is the term used to describe diseases that can be transmitted to humans from animals -if from parasites or insects (fleas, mosquitos, etc.), they're called vector-borne- and there are a host of them, including, but not limited to: • "bird flu," • Anisakiasis (worms in raw fish), • Brucellosis (sheep, cows, goats, deer, etc.), • Campylobacteriosis (most frequently found in undercooked chicken), • Cat Scratch Fever, • E. coli (especially O157:H7), • mycobacteriosis (from fish tanks), • giardia (waterborne parasite found in the gut of wild and domesticated animals), • hantavirus (one my personal favorite, fascinating disease - from deer or mice fece), • herpes B (from monkeys & other primates), • Leptospirosis (raccoons, rodents -including squirrels & chipmunks- cattle, dogs, pigs), • Listeriosis (unpasteurized milk of cattle, goats), • Lymphocytic choriomeningitis -LCMV- (common house mouse, causes birth defects and mental retardation in humans), • Lyme Disease (from ticks), • Monkeypox (monkeys, mice, rabbits, rodents), • Plague -Yersinia pestis- (fleas, rodents, chipmunks, dogs, cats), • Psittacosis (parrot fever) and avian chlamydiosis (the greatest fear of chicken farmers -from inhaled dried bird droppings, nasal secretions from psittacine -parrot-like birds), • Q fever (cattle, sheep, goats, pets), • rabies (horses, dogs, cats, numerous animals), • Rat bite fever (rats), • Raccoon roundworm ('coons fece), • Ringworm (dogs, cats - can reside on carpets, furniture & personal items), • Salmonellosis (aquariums, milk, chicks, ducklings, goats, livestock, owls, reptiles, amphibians, rodents & pocket pets), • Sporotrichosis (dogs, horses, cats), • Tick-Borne Relapsing Fever -TBRF- (ticks), Toxocara -roundworm- (dogs, cats), • Tularemia (wild animals, rodents, hares, beavers, ticks), • Toxoplasmosis (causes human miscarriage, poor growth, pre-term delivery, hydrocephalus), • West Nile virus (mosquito, birds, horses), ___ If you're interested in using this image, or any my photographs, you may contact me via e-mail: SouthernBreezeOnFlickr@gmail.com.
