This introductory course in Astronomy is designed to emphasize conceptual understanding of the Solar System, the Milky Way Galaxy, and the Universe in which we live. I will use the internet, my personal telescopes, Algebra 2, and many hands-on activities to teach students about Kepler’s and Newton’s laws, stellar evolution, light, the Big Bang Theory, black holes, and much, much more. This class can be an elective credit OR an elective science credit.  Students will learn about how science is done, how it progresses, and how it has changed our understanding of ourselves and of the Universe around us. Get ready to enjoy having your mind boggled and stretched!  Algebra 2 completion or concurrent enrollment is a prerequisite.  Sophomores need teacher approval.

BIOLOGY

Biological Science Core Credit

(3520)

Fee $10.00

This is a general course designed the fill the state core requirement.  This course is lab oriented and emphasizes the development of skills in observation, measurement, hypothesizing, data collection and interpretation.  Topics include the diversity of life, cell biology, changes through time, genetics, reproduction, ecology, and the role of human beings in the biological world.

AP BIOLOGY

Biological Science Core Credit

(3524)

Year Fee $10.00

This course is designed to meet the objectives of a general, college-level biology course. College credit up to 8 semester hours will be awarded by passing the AP Test. This includes knowledge of facts, principles, and processes of biology (biochemistry); an understanding of the means by which biological information is collected, interpreted, and used to generate hypotheses and predictions; an understanding that science is a human endeavor with social consequences and an awareness of career opportunities in the biological sciences.

Prerequisite: Biology or Honors Biology, and Chemistry or Teacher Permission

 BOTANY
Elective Science Credit
11th & 12th Grade Only
(3875)
Semester
Fee $5.00
This course emphasizes the unique features of the plant kingdom. The structure of plant roots stems and leaves will be the central theme. Habitats, plant diversity and plant reproduction will also be reviewed.

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE
Elective Science Credit
11th & 12th Grade Only(3810)
Year
Fee $10.00

Environmental Science is a one-year course. The material covered fills the state core science requirement for one year of science credit.   Environmental science encompasses not only science, but many facets of life including ethics, values, sociology, politics and law, motivation, responsibility, and philosophy. Most of all, the course is about life: the cycles of nature, human influence on environment, and more importantly the means to sustain life on planet earth.

CHEMISTRY

Physical Science Core Credit

Year
Fee $10.00

Students should have a minimum of first year algebra.  This class is designed to give extra time and help to students that do not have a strong math background.  This is an introductory level chemistry course and will benefit those students planning an entry level or a technical level career pathway.  Students will work individually or in small groups to develop an understanding of the structure of matter, the rules that govern its behavior, and the reactions resulting from those rules.  This class will also help develop lab skills and processes.  The importance of chemistry as a central science and its application in everyday life will be emphasized.

 CE CHEMISTRY

Physical Science Core Credit
Year
Fee
WSU CHEM 1110

Students should have a minimum of Algebra 2 and a basic knowledge of how to use a TI-83. CE Chemistry is an introductory chemistry course designed for those students planning to go to  college or a university. CE Chemistry is more accelerated than chemistry. It will cover the same core content of Chemistry (for specific content refer to Chemistry entry above). CE Chemistry will require a research based project each term and a lab notebook.
 AP CHEMISTRY
Physical Science Core Credit
(3622)

Year

Fee $10.00

This is a second year chemistry course that will take students further into the structure of matter and the rules that govern its behavior.  This course is highly recommended for students that plan on entering any science related field, engineering, medicine, attending a military academy.  Some labs will require time after school for completion.  Some of the topics covered are equilibriums, reaction rates, thermodynamics, and electrochemistry.  Those students that pass the AP Chemistry exam at the end of the year may receive up to 8 semester hours of college credit.  Prerequisite: Chemistry and Algebra 2 or Teacher permission  Prerequisite:  Chemistry and Algebra 2 or Teacher permission

ORGANIC CHEMISTRY
Elective Science Credit
11th & 12th Grade Only
(  3623)
 Semester

Organic Chemistry is a second year chemistry class designed for students interested in the science or medical fields of study. Students will be introduced to basic organic chemistry concepts including bonding, molecular geometry, resonance, configuration, conformation and stereochemistry. The class will also introduce students to basic reaction mechanisms such as substitution and elimination reactions. Students will also learn about the structure and reactivity of basic functional groups; alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, alkyl halides, alcohols, and carbonyls. Students will learn basic organic lab techniques such as distillation, boiling point, melting point, and recrystallization.
