Country Dancing… What is it?

When you hear the word “Country Dancing” what do you think? Line dancing, square dancing, contra dancing, Scottish country dancing, round dancing, two step? Hmmm….well…they may be all of these. That’s what makes it so confusing. There are so many different types of Country Dancing.

The Country Dancing I am promoting on this site is Line Dance and Partner or Social Country Dancing.

A line dance is a choreographed dance with a repeated sequence of steps in which a group of people dance in one or more lines or rows without regard for the gender of the individuals, all facing either each other or in the same direction, and executing the steps at the same time. Line dancers are not in physical contact with each other. Older "line dances" have lines in which the dancers face each other, or the "line" is a circle, or all dancers in the "line" follow a leader around the dance floor; while holding the hand of the dancers beside them "wikipedia".

Partner dancing is where you lead a partner around the floor performing the patterns you choose. The styles can be anything from 2step, east coast swing, cha cha, waltz, west coast swing, pony swing, shuffle, polka, night club 2step and more. Yes, these are all country dances. What makes them different from other social dances is the music! In the late 70’s when country music evolved to country rock, a new style of country dancing evolved with it. Some referred to it as Texas 2step but really the original name is Country Western Dancing. It became so popular that organizations and competitions appeared everywhere. Today the UCWDC organizes an annual World Championship Event where competitors gather from all over the world to compete. Partner dancing regained popularity in the mid 1970's with the emergence of Disco. In the late 1970's as Disco died and country music continued to rise in rapid popularity, a resurgence of interest in western dance emerged. Older dancers suddenly became models for a new generation.

The United Country Western Dance Council is an international organization which promotes country western dance by producing festivals and competitions in 20 countries.  They host the annual World Championships of Country Dance for couples and line dancers and advocate country dancing as a social activity for people of all ages and abilities.
