Open Manufacturing

Made Just For You - Manufacturing in this 21st Century is about to undergo radical transformation as open source, open access, 3D printing, the Internet of Things (IoT), and other collaborative and innovative technologies and solutions emerge and spread across the globe.

Check out some of the organizations that are early developers or adopters of the new 'open' 3D manufacturing, robotics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, sales, marketing, and distribution processes and solutions:
  • America Makes - Web site of the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute (NAMII).
  • Association of 3D Printing - A privately held marketing association for the emerging 3D printing industry.
  • Etsy - Where people from around the world connect to buy and sell unique goods, often built using 3D printing technology.
  • Fab Foundation - Fostering the growth of 3D printing and Fab Labs around the world.
  • H2O is the world’s leading open source ‘deep learning’ AI platform. H2O is used by over 80,000 data scientists and more than 9,000 organizations around the world.
  • MakerBot - It has built the largest installed base of desktop 3D printers.
  • Mcor Technologies - An innovative manufacturer of affordable, full-color and eco-friendly 3D printers.
  • OpenAI is a collaborative non-profit research organization working with other institutions and researchers making its artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) patents and research ‘open’ to the public.
  • Open Building Institute - Focused on collaborative 'open' building solutions.
  • QuickpartsA leading provider of 3D content-to-print solutions including 3D printers, print materials and on-demand custom parts.
  • Shapeways - A leading 3D printing marketplace and design & development community.
  • Stratasys - One of the world's leaders in 3D printing.
  • Thingiverse - Providing digital designs for physical objects to the maker community.
  • 3DSystems - A leading provider of 3D printing centric design-to-manufacturing solutions.
  • 3Ders News - One of the biggest 3D printing news site in the world.

Free & Open Source 3D Software

If you’re just getting started you might want to try some of the following 3D modeling software which can be downloaded for free.

Think about it - The use of 3D printing, or additive manufacturing, has the potential to move us towards an economic model and society that embraces decentralized 'production by the masses', versus centralized 'mass production'. It allows society to move from a model where the means of production is owned and controlled by large corporations, to one where the means of production rests in the hands of the individual. Watch the growing global 'open' Maker Movement closely as it unfolds.

3D Printing

3D Printing, also known as 'additive manufacturing', is seizing the public stage and growing exponentially. Software - often 'open source' - directs molten plastic, metal, or some other feedstocks inside the printer to build up a physical product layer by layer, creating a fully formed object, even one with movable parts, that then pops out of the printer.  -  Read "The Zero Marginal Cost Society" by Jeremy Rifkin
