The Truth About Eternity

The Greatest Expression of Love

Life’s most important question is “How can I go to Heaven when I die?” Questions that involve God and His Word deserve answers. God has given the answer to life’s most important question in His perfect and true Word, the Bible. We don’t have to “do” anything to gain salvation; God has already “done” what is necessary. However there are five important facts we must understand.

1. Recognize we are separated from God because of sin.

Romans 3:10-11, “As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.”

What is sin? Sin is any act or thought contrary to God’s laws and commandments. Sin separates us from a Holy (sinless) God. Also, Also, sin is not just something we “do”–it is how we are born. Even the cutest baby will do that which is naturally wrong. They will never have to go to school to “learn how to sin” they do it by nature.

Romans 3:23, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;”

2. Realize there is a penalty for sin, and good works cannot keep us from it.

Romans 5:12, “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:”

Who was that one man? God created a perfect man and woman, Adam and Eve. He gave them a simple commandment that they should not eat of a certain tree. He gave them a free will which allowed them to love and obey God, but it also gave them freedom to disobey God. Satan tricked both of them in eating the forbidden fruit, and at that moment they “died.” Death is simple “separation”—not only physical but also spiritual separation—from a loving God.

Romans 6:23, “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

3. Understand God loves us and desires to give us eternal life.

Romans 6:23, “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

Why did God send His Son? Jesus Christ was the only person Who could satisfy God’s righteous demands for a payment for the sins of the world. Jesus was the perfect, spotless Lamb Who came to redeem the world and provide a way to God. No greater and more loving of a gift could God give than His only Son.

Romans 5:8-9, “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.”

John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

4. We must believe that Jesus Christ was our substitute, and by faith receive Him as our Saviour.

1 Peter 3:18, “For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:”

I believe in God–is that enough? Having an understanding of God is not enough. One must “repent” of their sins (turn away) and from all they are trusting in for their salvation, and put their faith in God’s way of salvation—Jesus Christ. The Bible tells us that even Satan and his demons believe there is a God. Belief alone is not enough; there must be repentance.

Romans 10:9-10, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”

Ephesians 2:8-9, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

5. Pray a simple and sincere prayer to God for Jesus to come into your heart and be your Saviour.

What do I say? It isn’t all about what you say, but what you believe with your heart. We must “repent” of our sins (turn away) and from all we are trusting in for our salvation, and put our faith in God’s way of salvation—Jesus Christ. Here is a sample prayer that may help you:

“Dear God, I know that I am separated from You because of sin. I confess that in my sin, I cannot save myself.   I believe Jesus died for me, was buried, and rose again for me. Right now, I repent and willingly turn to Jesus alone to be my Saviour. I ask You to save me from the penalty of my sin, and I trust You to provide eternal life to me. —Amen”

If you just sincerely prayed that prayer, you have just become a child of God! Your eternal destiny has changed. This is the most important choice you will ever make in your life. It only gets better from this point on as you learn and grow in knowledge and love for God.
