The Cooley Concert Bands and Jazz Band have performed throughout the community including: The Hurricane Katrina Relief Benefit Concert at Woodcreek High School, Roseville Arts Faire, Red Ribbon Contest Dinner, Safeway Grand Opening, California Readers Convention, Kaiser Permanente's "Thrive" Family Arts Event, the Blue Line Gallery, the Roseville Relay for Life, Sun City Roseville, Eskaton Village, as well as numerous school concerts, rallies, and various other events. In 2007 they were invited to perform a joint concert with the Sacramento State Concert Band in the CSUS recital hall. More recently, in June 2009, the Advanced Band and Jazz Band were invited to play at UC Davis' Mondavi Center for the Arts with the UC Davis Concert Band. The Cooley Jazz band hosted a concert featuring the Southern Oregon University Jazz Band. The Cooley Band has received grants from the Performing Arts of Roseville to host a combined concert with the Roseville Community Concert Band. The band has also played the Star Spangled Banner to open games for the Sacramento Kings and the Sacramento River Cats. In November, 2015, the Cooley Advanced band played in a joint concert with the American River College Symphonic Band.

Numerous Cooley students have participated in the California Music Educator's Association (CMEA) Middle School and Sixth Grade Honor Band and the California Band Director's Association (CBDA) All-State Honor Band. The bands have participated in many local and regional music festivals including the Woodcreek Concert Band Festival, Golden Empire Music Festival, Oakmont Band Festival, Woodcreek Jazz Festival, Sacramento State Jazz Festival, Folsom Jazz Festival, Jesuit Jazz Festival, and the Reno Jazz Festival, earning many Superior and Excellent scores.


Ms. Stephanie Sugano was one of the original Cooley teachers when Robert C.Cooley Middle School opened in 2000. Presently, Ms. Sugano teaches three periods of concert band as well as the jazz band, which meets during Cooley's enrichment period and before school. In 2006, she received the Placer County's "Teachers Who Make a Difference" award and was the 2016-17 Roseville City School District "Teacher of the Year" and Placer County's "Middle School Teacher of the Year". She has previously served as both vice president and president for the California Music Educator's Association Capitol Section. She has has conducted the CMEA Sixth Grade Honor Band and the Calaveras Bi-County Honor Band.For her undergraduate degree, Ms. Sugano attended UC Davis and was a double major in Music and Sociology. While studying under Professor Deborah Pittman, she was concertmaster of the UC Davis Concert Band for three seasons, Principal Clarinet of the UC Davis Symphony Orchestra, member of the UC Davis Chorus and participant in numerous chamber ensembles. In 1998 she won the Olga Brose Valente Memorial Prize in Wind Playing.

After completing her Bachelor's degree, Ms. Sugano earned her teaching credential from CSU Sacramento and student taught at Sheldon High School and Barrett Middle School. She also served as a long term sub, teaching band, in the Folsom-Cordova Unified School District.

Ms. Sugano received her Master's degree in Instrumental Conducting at CSU Sacramento, studying under Dr. Robert Halseth. At UC Davis she studied conducting with Jonathan Elkus, D. Kern Holoman and Paul Hillier.

Ms. Sugano is currently the conductor and musical director of the Roseville Community Concert Band and the founding director of the Roseville Middle School Summer Music Camp.

Although her main instrument is the clarinet she also sings, plays ukulele and the bass guitar and loves to conduct.
