Camping Forcanada,near Vielha, Spain

One of Wynne's cool campsites!(see links at end)

One of favourite routes into Spain is via the Val d’Aran.  This is reached by leaving the N117/A64 at Montrejeau and joining the N125.  Camping Forcanada, which is clearly signposted, lies 3 km south of Bossost and 9 km north of Vielha.

This is a pleasant, friendly, family run site  with plenty of lush grass and surrounded by high tree-covered mountains.  Access is easy and the ground is very firm.  The facilities are all good (without being luxurious) and there is a small swimming pool and children’s play area.  A small shop has basic supplies and the campsite office has maps and information about the locality.

The friendly bar sells snacks although meals are available within walking distance.  A fast flowing river passes between the site and the road and you can often watch canoeists and “white water rafters” negotiate the rocks as they pass.  Although  close to the main road there is very little traffic noise.  Another point in its favour is the fact that it is considerably less expensive than any of the other campsites we have tried in this area.

Over the last few years this site has become a favourite of ours.  It is suitable for a one-night stop but it is also excellent site for a longer stay.  The town of Vielha is just a few kilometres away (there is actually a footpath from the site)  Here you will find a twelfth century statue of Christ in the parish church of Sant Miqueu.  There is also a museum (Museo Etnologico) which shows Aranese history and folklore.  Nearby are numerous small mountain villages which can be reached by foot.  Twenty years ago these villages were virtually deserted and many of the houses lay in ruins.  However with Spain’s recent economic prosperity most of the houses have been renovated and many are now used as second homes – particularly sought after for their proximity to local ski resorts.  The nearby village of Es Bordes supplies the granite for the walls of the local houses and Arros supplies the slates.  The local language is Aranese which is related to Occitan but is unique to this small area.

The walks in the area are truly wonderful.  You can choose whether to stroll for an hour or hike all day.  Zig-zags paths quickly take you high above the tree line and reward you with wonderful views of snow-capped mountains in the distance as eagles soar overhead. Throughout the spring and summer there are masses of wild flowers as well as alpine strawberries and raspberries.

Camping Forcanada is a super place to stop – but don’t forget to take your walking boots!
