English/Anglais AS2007-0071a 11 January 2007 Kandahar Province, Afghanistan The cook and kitchen at the Kandahar Technical School. The school is struggling to regain it's footing after 26 years of turbulance. The Kandahar Technical School officially opened in 1957, with some of the buildings on the grounds dating to the early 1930's. During years of war and conflict the school and its equipment has sustained damage, loss, and neglect. The Kandahar Provincial Reconstruction Team (KPRT) has undertaken a project to rebuild and renovate the school, then re-equip it to accomodate up to 500 students learning any of seven trades. The project will be completed with local labour and materials, funded by Canadian Agencies, and managed by the KPRT. The KPRT consists of Canadian Forces members, a civilian police contingent led by the RCMP, representatives of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, and the Canadian International Development Agency. The PRT conducts coordinated interdepartmental operations to promote good governance and assist the Government of Afghanistan in extending it's authority into the Province of Kandahar, facilitating the development of a stable, secure, and self-sustaining environment for the Afghan people. Joint Task Force Afghanistan (JTFA) is Canada?s military contribution to Afghanistan. Canadian operations will focus on working with Afghan authorities to improve security, governance and economic development. The Canadian Forces (CF) contribution in Afghanistan comprises about 2,400 soldiers, most of whom serve with JTFA at Kandahar Airfield and Camp Nathan Smith, Canada?s Provincial Reconstruction Team, in Kandahar City. Additional personnel are assigned to various military headquarters, a support base, and civilian organizations.
