I spent Saturday up at the Chain of Lakes Park, a new project that's being constructed behind the Titusville Campus of Brevard Community College. I was up there helping out with the North Brevard Heritage Foundation, handing out materials on the Chain of Lakes Park and the planned Heritage Park that will be constructed within. Okay. Heritage Park is planned to go on this North County Parks Referendum thing, going on the ballot this coming Tuesday. If it passes, the Heritage Park will be done - all conditions permitting - in two years. It's something that the Heritage Foundation has been heavily involved with - moving buildings etc. I have helped with two projects that are destined for Heritage Park so far: the Clifton Colored School House (1891) and the Hutcheson family Barn (1923). All of the structures for Heritage Park have been donated. All of the work has been donated or is volunteer work. I'll tell y'all a little about the structures planned for the park: The Gibson Tenement Houses were built in Titusville in the 1910s as affordable housing for migrant citrus grove workers. They sat on the corner of South Street and Hopkins (US 1 Southbound) for decades, then they were condemned, or the site was slated for developement. The Foundation postponed demolition long enough to move three of four tenement houses. One house is still on the site, but the resident of that house refuses to move. The three moved houses will become museums and facilities for the Heritage Park. The Clifton Colored School was built in 1891 by an African-American man on Merrit Island who was tired of having the expense and traveling of hiring out tutors to teach his children. He built a small one-room schoolhouse on his property on North Merrit Island in 1891 to teach his children in a more organized manner. By 1910 most of the children had graduated and moved away from the family. One daughter, Eugenia, returned to the school house to live in it as a residence up until the late 1940s. in the 1950s, the US Government used eminent domain on Merrit Island and Cape Canaveral to create Kennedy Space Center. About a dozen small towns and settlements disappeared under the Space Center's barbed wire blanket and all of the standing structures were demolished, burned, or moved. But for some reason the little school house was missed. It sat abandoned and decaying for over forty years, until it was rediscovered, disassembled, and placed in storage. It shall be reassembled and established as (I believe) a living museum with period school desks, readers, and artifacts. There will be a Water tower, windmill, and Cook's house that will be moved to the site from a former homestead at William's Point and placed in a replicated citrus grove. Also, there will be the Oliver's Camp House, (detail of a window shown above) a 1910 craftsman bungalow that was moved from a site in Jay-Jay. It shall serve as a citrus industry museum. Then, there will be a Pinapple Field. Brevard County had numerous pineapple fields at the turn of the century. Almost all are gone today, except for one last one on Merrit Island. Cuba started importing cheaper pineapples in 1911, and killed the Brevard County pineapple industry. There will be a Convention Center and outdoor ampitheater for community events, dances and conventions. The convention center building's exterior will be patterned after a fruit-packing house. There will be the LaGrange Depot (which actually turns out to be the old Mims Depot) from about 1903 or so. It will be restored as a museum. Behind it shall be a small section of railroad from the old Spur Line that carried passengers from the steamers after they landed in a town called Enterprise to Titusville before the steamers landed at Salt Lake Landing or Sand Point regularly. There will also be a picnic pavillion, another historic house moved to the park (which one I'm not sure) a pull-ferry, to take you across the lake to a Pioneer Palmetto shack, built like the little thatched palmetto fan shacks that the first settlers of Brevard built in the 1860s and 70s. And along with that, an Indian encampment, which will be an authentic replica of the encampments that the Indians native to North Brevard had when they inhabited the area. All of that will be placed next to the Parrish Medical Center's Main Street project, also involving historic structures, which will be moved to the site and restored as doctor's offices and geriatric care. If all goes well on Tuesday, all that could happen in two years. Let's cross our fingers folks.

80/365 - Greetings from Daytona Beach.
March 20th, 2008 I was really tempted to upload a self portrait for my 365 photo for today, but you guys see a ton of me! Instead, I decided to make it this... I got this postcard in the mail from Amanda who has been down in Florida for a week. I jumped at the sight of it and pretty much demanded John give me it. On the back it reads ~ "Hey Bethy-boo! I miss you! Everything here is so amazing! We need to plan something like this soon! Anyways, talk to you soon! <3 Amanda" I gushed and smiled over it. I was so incredibly happy that she sent me one, I started getting giddy and shit. Besides all that I had fun today. Catie and I made Chocolate Chip Pancakes! They were amazing! John went to school this morning and went over Davids for forever. They finally came home and John ate his pink dyed pancakes (food coloring, ahaha) We told David about what Catie did and he flipped his shit, but like, in a good way. He just left and it's 3:33 AM. We played two rounds of Yahtzee and then everyone got bored. Catie popped in The Prince and Me but she didn't finish it. Amanda and I webcammed on Stickam today. She was showing me all the stuff she got, I am jealous! Amanda is getting her lip pierced tomorrow, I'm so incredibly happy for her. I just kinda hope she doesn't pussy out. I doubt she will but who knows. Pammy is debating about getting her Tragus pierced, in which case, I'll be extemely jealous. I've been saying that I've been wanting to get that done but John kept telling me he heard it hurts like hell. blah. Besides that, I'm money hungry. I'm getting on a I-need-new-clothes-right-now kick. I think I'm gonna go clothes shopping this coming month. Let's see...Amanda and I talked about going back to public school. Eh; (I don't really like talking about it) Catie did the dishes, made pancakes, cooked spagetti AND cleaned the stove. Jesus god, she's a cleaner. She got me in the mood and I started cleaning but then I stopped. I will probably finish it tomorrow. I'm hoping to turn my alarm clock all the way up so I actually get up. I think I should put it on the other side of the room. and uhh, Liz came over. Not to mention, I want heather. John talked to her today and she wanted to know why I couldn't tell her.... I don't have her aim name anymore.... At least I don't think so. I also made a new playlist and found batteries to actually take some new self portraits. I have a pimple on my leg and it's pretty swollen. I don't think I've ever had a pimple this huge. I did pop it but it didn't do shit. GAH! that's pretty much it. =P Oh, btw... I'm going to upload the self portraits that I actually like tomorrow. Not now, I'm too tired. [3:42 AM - finished]
