There seems to be a new menu at the North China Restaurant in Santa Clara. Cannibalism? Patricide? Actually, it is a new restaurant featuring Hong Kong style foods. The initial reviews on Yelp and Urbanspoon have been quite favorable. We ate shortly after the grand opening and had a good, not excellent, experience. The menu is very long with lots of options. It isn't always clear whether an item is made to share or is intended for one person. We asked for the shrimp won-ton soup and did not get it; that turned out ok as the other dishes were quite filling. We ordered an eggplant with pork clay pot dish which was excellent. It was very rich. We also got a sizzling chicken platter which, while good, was a bit crowded on a small iron skillet. (China Delight, just down the street, uses a very heavy and incredibly hot skillet with the same dish.) The chicken was generous but the pieces were a bit too large. We got steamed rice which came in individual bowls rather than a large steamer bowl as at most other restaurants around Santa Clara. The price ($20.70) was fair and we were well fed. The restaurant is completely renovated inside; in fact, I don't think there is anything of the North China except the walls and roof. The cooks are behind a glass wall so that you can see the kitchen. Peking ducks and some roasted chickens hang in a corner of the cooking area. We were bothered that some of the staff went out to smoke with a door propped open and it was problematic for my asthma throughout the dining area. Rating: Not quite sure yet. We will give them another try soon.

There seems to be a new menu at the North China Restaurant in Santa Clara. Cannibalism? Patricide? Actually, the North China -- which rarely had more than three customers inside and stayed open 30 years -- has been replaced by a newer restaurant. The North China sign came down later that week. Cooking Papa serves Hong Kong-style Chinese foods.
