The Hackable Chumby
The Hackable Chumby
My recent acquisition is the Chumby One, a bed-side WIFI-connected, touchscreen-equipped device that runs Linux on a ARM9-based CPU. offered it for $50 and I couldn't resist. So far it has been dutifully waking me up each morning, and entertaining me with fun little Flash widgets. The built-in speaker sounds much better than its diminutive size suggests. This device double duties as an internet radio tuner, fulfilling a role previously served by a Turtle Beach Audiotron internet radio I used to own and love. I'm pleasantly surprised that Chumby supports many USB devices out of the box: shown here is a Rii Mini wireless backlit keyboard / touchpad connected to the Chumby with the Linux terminal displayed. I've tried a Nyko Net Connect USB ethernet adapter (for Nintendo Wii, based on the ASIX AX88772 IC) and Chumby picked up that connection also. I've also successfully SSH'd into the Chumby as well. I may try plugging my USB TV tuner to see what Chumby will find. It seem Chumby treats the "snooze" button as an "enter" keystroke.
