Since 2006, ACM Ballet Company has been developing an innovative project, “Dance in Hospitals”. Though the program is elaborated in collaboration with hospital staff, it in no way presumes to be treatment or part of medical protocol. It suffices in and of itself.

This is simply dancers dancing, with sincerity, enthusiasm and professionalism, offering moments of pleasure through their art. In a setting where professional dance performances are rare, the originality of this project resides in the fact that the program seeks not to reach the elderly, the sick, the hospitalized, the patient, but an audience made up of people.

In groups of four, professional artists spend the entire day in the hospital, in contact with each patient, especially those weakened and isolated by their condition. Experienced choreographers embrace the constraints of space, time and setting to conceive ballets as they would for a performance in traditional theatres.

A very important aspect of this project is continuity. The performances are not isolated events: the dancers return regularly, and everyone involved, from the personnel to the patients and their families, eagerly awaits the fresh air, life and emotion that blow through the hospital with their arrival. The anticipation and the recollection become part of the action, prolonging the benefits.

One observation is heard again and again, particularly in regard to patients affected by Alzheimer’s: “Dance reaches people when words no longer can.”
