20100714 Equipment Replacement :)
20100714 Equipment Replacement :)
Since beginning this hobby 2 years ago, I told myself I would only buy used equipment to learn on and not waste $s buying new. I wanted to make sure this was a hobby I was going to stick with. As it turns out, I enjoy this pursuit more today then when I started. Initially, I made it out under the stars about once every 2 weeks on avg. In the last 6 months, I've avg a little over 3 sessions per week! To date, I have never owned any new equipment; consistently buying 2nd hand from ebay, Astromart, CloudyNights and CraigsList. This has allowed me to keep a pretty tight budget. I've been fortunate to come out very well on my equipment transactions and have kept meticulous track of all the buy/sells. To date, I have a total investment of about $350 in the hobby (calculated: [Net Investment] = [total purchases] - [total sales] - [street value of current equipment] ) . For a hobby on which I spend 20hrs a week over 2 years, I'm very satisfied with that minimal level of investment. My current equipment is as follows: - SkyWatcher 80ED BlackDiamond + Meade DSI2pro camera for DSO work - Celestron 9.25 + Astronomik RGB/Ha filters + DMK21au04.as camera for Lunar/Planetary work - Meade LXD-75 German Equitorial Mount I'm excited to say: the time has come to stop being cheap, and start using some better quality equipment. Tomorrow I place my order for a brand spank'n new Celestron CGEM-800 telescope, ATik 314E Mono CCD camera, and a Meade f/3.3 focal reducer thru OPTCorp!!! OPTCorp was very helpful in giving me guidance and very competitive pricing on this equipment - slashing about 13% off retail prices for me - I highly recommend them. My goal in this Equipment refresh was to improve my guiding, step up up my DSO camera quality, and lower my equipment weight by consolidating both DSO and LP work thru the c8 scope. I'm making this change for a number of reasons: - My LXD75 mount was rated at 25lbs capacity and was MUCH too weak to accurately guide the 35lbs+ of equipment I had mounted on it. the CGEM is rated at 40lbs and after consolidating my equipment i'll be down to only about 17lbs. This should produce much better guiding and allow for much longer exposures, so I won't be forced to stretch the Histo so much and make for smoother images. - My previous setup weighed 112lbs, and it was a bit much to carry thru the house to setup each session. This setup will be about 25lbs lighter. - My DSI2pro was a great camera to learn with, but I need more resolution, better S/N ratio, and active cooling which the ATIK 314E will provide via 1300x1024 resolution. - The new DSO camera has 3x the pixels my old camera had, so I needed to triple my light gathering (SW80ED=7.8sq-in vs new C8=21.9sq-in; while keeping the focal length around 650mm via f/3.3 reducer) - The larger aperture of the c9.25 seemed to really be affected by seeing conditions - much worse than my previous Meade 8" sct. I'm hoping the c8 will return to me the ability to do LP work in the evenings - as the c9.25 mostly required early morning work at f25 which is my standard LP focal length. - I like the warranties and the guarantee of pristine performance that comes with new equipment It'll take a few weeks to get this equipment shipped to me and for me to integrate it into my system (currently I have my setup 100% controlled from my computer using software to identify, find, focus, and acquire images.) But I can't wait to start! in the meantime, please get out and get your viewing/imaging in as the skies will be cloudy for a number of days once I receive the shipment!
