A Glance about Kiel
In 1946, Kiel was named the seat of government for Schleswig-Holstein, and it officially became the state's capital in 1972. Above all, Kiel is most famous for its Kieler Woche sailing festival held annually in June. Hope to see you in the Kieler Woche in the following years.......

Kiel is a city in northern part of Germany, the capital of the state of Schleswig-Holstein. Having a population of approximately 233,795, Kiel has been one the Germany's main naval base since the 1860's. Being located on the Baltic Sea at the head of the Kieler Förde, the cityof Kiel is a center for German shipbuilders and the eastern terminus of the Kiel Canal. One of the biggest sailing events in the world, takes place every year in Kiel called the the Kieler Woche, (Kiel Week).
Kiel-Schilksee holds the prestige of hosting the the Olympic sailing competitions, when the Olympic Games were held in Berlin and Munich respectively in the past. Kiel was the site of the sailors' mutiny which sparked the German Revolution in late 1918.
Kiel was heavily bombed by the Allies during World War II; it is estimated that 80% of the remaining old town, 72% of the residential areas, and 83% of the industrial areas were destroyed, as it has the status of a naval port and as production site for submarines. The city was rebuilt after the war, but city planners failed to revive the former cityscape. Kiel was less meticulously restored than the other nearby towns in Schleswig-Holstein like Lübeck, Flensburg or Schleswig.

Founded in 1665 as the Academia Holsatorum Chiloniensis by duke Christian Albrecht of Holstein-Gottorp in order to train priests and government officials is the prestigious Christian Albrechts University of Kiel. It was the northern-most university in the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. Especially during the 19th century a number of important scholars worked and taught in Kiel. It was one of the first universities to obey the Gleichschaltung in 1933 and removed many of the professors and students from the school, as e.g. Ferdinand Tönnies or Felix Jacoby. The university buildings sustained much damage during the Second World War. The school was rebuilt at a different location with only a very few of the older buildings housing the medical school.
Notable personalities from the University of Kiel were Max Planck, Heinrich Hertz, Otto Diels, etc.
