Columbus Magnet School is an exciting, creative and stimulating learning environment for students. At our school, parents and caregivers are offered the unique opportunity to share in their child's educational experience. Throughout the year ahead, you will be notified of these and other involvement opportunities through the Thursday Notice, individual classroom communications and the PTA newsletter.

The links below provide you with a list of some, but not all, of the activities and opportunities for the upcoming school year, including both short- and long-term activities. The descriptions provided can help you decide on your interests and time availability to volunteer at CMS. Please read through the information at the links below carefully, and click on the form to indicate your interest. Your involvement is not only appreciated, it's essential to the vibrancy of our school!

Dine Around Town:

Chair: OPEN

Book Fairs: (Fall & Spring) Volunteers help with set up, assist students with wish lists, cashier, straighten tables, keep inventory, and pack up. Daytime and evening shifts available. Chairs: Kinnari Shah

Yankee Candle Fundraiser: Volunteers sort and deliver orders to classrooms during the school day. Delivery distribution is anticipated in November. Chair: OPEN

Special Persons Breakfast: (10/5)

Chairs: Eva Balazs & Julie Colbath

Halloween Howl: (10/26) A CMS family favorite! Volunteers organize this “Spooktacular” event, as well as, decorate, set-up and clean-up. Chair: Christine Grey

Welcome Back Picnic: (September 15th) A family event designed to be a fun “Welcome Back” gathering for all to enjoy following summer vacation! Volunteers help organize this event, as well as gather supplies, set-up, serve and clean-up. Chair: Adam Blank & Christine Grey

Movie Night: (11/30) Just like the drive in! (Well, sort of). We project movies on the large screen in the auditorium using the LCD projector. Families bring chairs and blankets and enjoy the show. Volunteers needed to choose movies, prepare flyers, collect admission, and plan refreshments. Chair: Melissa Iacovacci

Silent Auction Dinner: (April 21st) Committee members organize this profitable and fun adult-only evening fundraiser. Volunteers solicit prizes, prepare program booklet, plan refreshments, and tabulate sales. Co-Chairs: Rina Brittell

Staff Appreciation Lunch/Teacher's Dinners: A festive luncheon to thank all the teachers and staff for all of their hard work during the school year. Chairperson(s) coordinate parent volunteers, set up and clean up after event. Chairs: Open

Spirit Wear: This committee works with school staff and parents in planning and organizing Columbus Spirit events as well as promoting and distributing our Columbus School Spirit Wear. Volunteers process orders, set up and sell items at all major school functions both during the day and evenings. Chair: OPEN

Yearbook Committee: Volunteers gather photographs of class and school events, assemble photo collages, set type, and layout pages. Chair: OPEN

BoxTops for Education: Chairperson is responsible for organizing a BoxTops collection on a monthly basis. The Chairperson, along with volunteers will then collect, count and bundle the BoxTops for mailing. Chair: Goedele Gudet

Ice Skating:

CMS Student Directory: Volunteers help to coordinate and gather family/student contact information that is printed into the directory and distributed to each family. Chair: Rebecca Welte

Family Sweetheart Dance : (February 8th) Volunteers help organize the dance which features a DJ, food & drink, photo opportunities as well as keepsakes. Students are encouraged to bring their mothers, fathers, grandfathers, grandmothers, aunts or uncles to the dance! Chairs: Olga Zargos-Traub

CMS Triathlon: (June 1st)An annual CMS sporting event featuring three timed athletic events which include swimming, cycling and running. Volunteers are needed to make this event a success. Chair: Smith Mowry

After-School Enrichment Programs: Volunteers are needed to assist in the sign-in attendance and sign-out dismissal of students participating in the daily after-school enrichment programs held at CMS. Chair: Your After School Company

Bourbon, Beer & Wine: A wine tasting, adult night out for CMS parents, staff and friends. A great chance to enjoy a pre-holiday night out, try some new wines, and raise funds for the PTA. Chair: Adam Blank & Bridget Connolly

School/Other Non-PTA Events

Picture Day: (TBD) Volunteers help the day run smoothly by assisting photographers, calling classes down at their appointed times and helping our students look their best by fixing hair and adjusting clothing.

Computers: Volunteers work with students on computers in the classroom and/or in the computer lab on teacher-assigned materials. Classrooms have scheduled computer time each week. Commitment: one hour per week.

Columbus Safety Alliance (CSA): - This group is made up of CMS parents committed to providing a safe learning environment for students of CMS through research, fundraising and community involvement. Current initiatives include beautification and safety of the school grounds and building & process preparedness for emergency situations. CSA is looking for volunteers to lead and assist with current and future initiatives. Chairs: Open

Governance Council: Columbus administrators, staff, and parents serve on this site-based management council whose goal is to increase student achievement and performance. The council meets once a month on Tuesday evenings. Term on council: Two years - Fifth grade parents may serve one-year term. Interested participants must submit a letter of intent to the Governance Council, attn: Medard Thomas, Principal by the last Friday in September.

Magnet (Bank Street/HOT School) Committee: This committee meets once a month, to discuss Bank Street & HOT (Higher Order Thinking) happenings at Columbus. This committee includes school administrators, staff and parent representatives from each grade level.

Library: Volunteers are needed to assist the librarian with the day to day operations of the library: filing, shelving, repairing books, and reading to classes. Volunteers are also needed to assist the classroom teacher in weekly visits to the CMS library.

Publicity: Volunteers are needed to help with publicity of all school events including contacting local press and news outlets to get the word out about the terrific events taking place at Columbus Magnet School.

Room Parent: Volunteers are needed to assist the classroom teacher in planning and soliciting donations for classroom activities, parties, and special projects. Also, room parents will serve as a link between the PTA and the parents in their classroom. Room parents will initiate classroom phone chain when needed.

If you are a first-time Columbus volunteer and plan to have direct contact with students on a regular basis, you are required to take a TB test. Our school nurse Breege O’Reilly will administer the test free of charge (courtesy of the PTA). If you had a TB test or chest x-ray within the past year simply show Mrs. O’Reilly the results. When returning the volunteer form, please indicate if you will need a test. We will contact you with test dates. Please return all information to the PTA mailbox.
