Historically, CLAS has published a refereed journal, Statement, and a monthly newsletter, Currents. We recently relaunched these publications:

Call for Manuscripts: Summer 2021

Our spring Call for Manuscripts asked educators to share something they’ve taught online that you would take back to the classroom when you meet students face-to-face.  It’s no wonder we didn’t get much teacher writing—we are all exhausted, frustrated, sad, angry, and trying so hard to engage our students through a computer.

Option One:  What will you carry forward?

Here’s our plan for the next issue of Statement and a new due date for your writing.  We still think it is important to think about what you will carry forward when you are back in the classroom with your students.  Some of you may want to write about what you’ve figured out about teaching and your students during these difficult times.  Is there anything you will carry forward?

Submission Guidelines:

  • Manuscripts should be double spaced (including quotations and works cited), no more than 10-12 pages, and follow current MLA style.

  • Manuscripts should not have been published anywhere else.

  • Number all pages.

  • Please include a photo and short bio.

Statement is refereed. Manuscripts are read by at least two reviewers.

Deadline:  July 30, 2021

Send manuscripts to Karen Hartman (kj_hartman@comcast.net) Include a statement that the work has not been published and is not being submitted elsewhere.

Option two:  Things that made you think, laugh, or feel the joy in your writing or your students’ writing.

Share a book you’ve read – a book you’d love to teach in your classroom.

Share a professional book you think other teachers should read.

Share a piece of your own writing—memoir, poetry, short story, non-fiction, any genre you want to create.

Share a piece of great student writing.

What’s the funniest thing you saw or heard online this year?

Guidelines: We are looking for  shorter, more informal writing in  option two. Send to Karen Hartman (kj_hartman@comcast.net) Make sure you include your name and school.
