Curriculum Vitae

I am an Assistant Professor in the Philosophy Department at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado. Previously I have been a Visiting Scholar at the University of California, Irvine's Department of Logic and Philosophy of Science, Ludwig-Maximilians Universität München's Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy, and the University of Edinburgh.

Before coming to CSU, I received a B.A. from Simpson College where I majored in Physics and Philosophy. I then received my Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Missouri. Following graduate school, I spent a year as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Pittsburgh's Center for Philosophy of Science and was an Assistant Professor at Lycoming College from 2012-2015 and an Associate Professor at Bryn Mawr College from 2016-2022.

My primary areas of research are the philosophy of science (especially the philosophy of biology), epistemology, and the philosophy of mind (especially cognitive science and concepts). I also have interests in philosophy of physics, logic (probability and symbolic), ethics, and modern philosophy. My current research focuses on the epistemological and metaphysical issues surrounding scientific explanation and understanding, the use of highly idealized and abstract models in biology, and the positive roles idealizations play in scientific theorizing.

When I am not doing philosophy, I enjoy playing guitar, building furniture, cooking, and getting outdoors to camp, hike, and bike.
