Fireplace Painting Project, February 20, 2008
Fireplace Painting Project, February 20, 2008
Yesterday I put the zillionth coat of paint on what was once the ugly red brick fireplace. The brick was hideous---red Georgia clay! It has taken more coats than normal because the brick is quite porous; to complicate the project, I have had to deal with brick that is facing outward with the crevices and holes facing outward instead of the nice smooth side. The final coat (I think this is the final coat, anyway) is Benjamin Moore Linen White (surprise! LOL!) in the "pearl" finish. It is a very nice soft white that pops against the Pecan Sandie walls without looking "harsh." I am now ready to get a professional help me mount my antique fireplace mantle on the brick. As you can see, there are the nasty bricks protruding outward that once held up the former ugly mantle I ripped off. My antique mantle is about an inch too shallow to mount over the break, so I am not sure how we will overcome this challenge. You can't chip the bricks off because I made a tiny attempt to do so, and I wound up with a snootful of disgusting red clay dust. I plan to cover the opening of the fireplace with a piece of nice plywood or MDF with some kind of decorative barbola roses or fleur-de-les applique that will blend seamlessly behind the pillars of the mantle. I got the idea from an issue of Country Living a few years ago; I will try and scan in the "inspiration" photo next week. Right now the antique mantle is green, but I am thinking of painting it a pale taupe or Swedish Gustavian style gray. If anyone has a paint suggestion, especially for the gray, let me know---I thought it would pick up on my silver sconces and the silver leaves in my Ikea curtains. I am very anxious to get this project completed because the fireplace is a focal point in the room, and getting the vintage mantle on there and the covering in place (I can't burn fires in the chimney because the smoke kills my sad allergies!) would really make the room feel more complete.
Ron and Candace Pott's Home
Ron and Candace Pott's Home
On a recent home tour in Mosier, Oregon the Wasco County Historical Society brought us to the home of Ron and Candace Pott's Home. It overlooks the Columbia River Gorge on the outskirts of Mosier, Oregon. The residence is unique in that the owners used recycled material throughout the dwelling. They salvaged much wonderful old building material. The timbers were salvaged from the Bumblebee Cannery in Astoria and the decorative steel roof shingles used throughout the house were from an old church in Pendleton. All the doors in the dwelling were recycled from old rooming houses. The room numbers and name tags are still on many of the doors, as are the original door knobs. The river stones used throughout the home are Montana Missoula Flood debris.
