We constitute ourselves as the Colorado Coalition Against an Attack On Iran (C-CAATI).  We agree to seek additional participants among people, in various parts of Colorado, who want to work actively to prevent an attack upon Iran.  We will also develop a website and other electronic facilities that spread our influence and make us easy to contact.

Political Essays and Analysis

  • BDS flyer 2.13d.pdf   176k - Apr 9, 2013, 12:12 PM by Tom Mayer (v3)
‎A one page flyer about the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement the purpose of which is to pressure Israel to honor international law and the human rights of Palestinians.‎
  • Behind Petraeus’s Resignation, By Robert Parry   0k - Nov 13, 2012, 11:32 AM by Tom Mayer (v2)
‎Among the more interesting commentaries about the Petraeus affair is this piece by journalist Robert Parry. Parry says that Petraeus was closely associated with the neocons and was pushing for an aggressive policy towards Iran. He also says that the vaunted military achievements of Petraeus were mostly hype, and that Obama and his closest advisers were not sorry to see the former general depart. His departure may increase the likelihood of a diplomatic settlement with Iran.‎
  • A Separation at Iranian Universities by Nazanin Shahrokni and Parastou Dokouhaki   0k - Oct 25, 2012, 3:30 PM by Tom Mayer (v2)
‎This essay from the Middle East Research and Information Project blog discusses the place of women in Iranian higher education. More specifically, it considers the motivations for and the consequences of a new effort to impose gender segregation within Iranian Universities. The authors point out that, despite anti-feminist government policies, women have made enormous progress within Iranian higher education. Sixty percent of new students at Iranian universities are now women. Iranian women consistently outperform Iranian men on the standardized tests used to control admissions to institutions of higher education. This essay is fairly long, but it is well worth the effort required to read it. It emphasizes the complexity of current gender relations in Iran and, by implication, the complexity of the entire society. Simplistic characterizations of Iran are bound to be both incorrect and profoundly misleading.‎
  • Obama vs. Romney on Iran By Trita Parsi   0k - Oct 23, 2012, 9:57 PM by Tom Mayer (v2)
‎In this piece -- published slightly before the third Presidential debate -- Parsi compares the policies of Obama and Romney on Iran. He criticizes Obama's policies in several ways, but concludes that Romney's approach would be far worse. Obama is willing to try diplomacy (of sorts)with Iran, while Romney appears to reject the diplomatic approach entirely. Moreover, Romney's ideas about Iran are closely linked with those of Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, while Obama has a much more distant and sometimes contentious relationship with Netanyahu.‎
  • A Negative Dialectic: Obama and His Silent Base by NORMAN POLLACK   0k - Oct 23, 2012, 9:54 PM by Tom Mayer (v2)
‎Professor Norman Pollack compares the role of the left in two different attempts to rescue capitalism: Roosevelt's New Deal and Obama's support finance capital approach. Under the New Deal the left had a prodding positive role. Under Obama's administration, Pollack finds the role of the left to be strangely passive and silent.‎
  • Defeat Without Illusions About Obama   0k - Oct 18, 2012, 1:57 PM by Tom Mayer (v2)
‎Although Obama is a bitter disappointment to progressives, it is still vitally important to defeat Romney. Obama is terrible on many issues, but Romney is at least equally bad on all of these, and he would be much worse on many other issues.‎
  • The Maimed By Chris Hedges   0k - Oct 18, 2012, 1:52 PM by Tom Mayer (v2)
‎Chris Hedges gave this talk on Sunday night, October 7, 2012, in New York City at a protest denouncing the 11th anniversary of the war in Afghanistan. The event, at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, was led by Veterans for Peace. Hedges' talk focuses on those who have been psychologically maimed in warfare. It is one of the most insightful and moving denunciations of warfare and its consequences that I have ever encountered.‎
  • Bibi’s Three Steps Forward, One Back by Trita Parsi   0k - Oct 13, 2012, 8:49 AM by Tom Mayer (v2)
‎Parsi argues against the position that Israeli prime minister Bibi Netanyahu has been defeated, constrained, or faced down in his interactions with Barack Obama. On the contrary, Netanyahu has successfully used the threat of attacking Iran to manipulate U.S. policy towards Iran and edge the United States closer to war with that country.‎
  • How Netanyahu's Bomb Iran Ploy Failed, by Gareth Porter   0k - Oct 9, 2012, 9:59 PM by Tom Mayer (v2)
‎"The rest of the world can stop worrying about Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's supposed threat to bomb Iran. Netanyahu's speech at the United Nations General Assembly last week appears to mark the end of his long campaign to convince the world that he might launch a unilateral strike on Iran’s nuclear programme. The reason for Netanyahu's retreat is the demonstration of unexpectedly strong pushback against Netanyahu’s antics by President Barack Obama. And that could be the best news on the Iran nuclear issue in many years."‎
  • “There’s No Economy on a Dead Planet”: Reflections on a Missing Election Issue By Paul Street   0k - Oct 9, 2012, 9:15 AM by Tom Mayer (v2)
‎"The Republicans and the Democrats both decline to take the great time bomb of climate change[18] with anything remotely like the seriousness it deserves since doing so would disrupt “the economy.” They both worship at the altar of growth and the notion that “a rising tide lifts all boats” – capitalism’s longstanding fake, eco-cidal answer to popular pressure for jobs, and end to poverty, and the downward redistribution of income and wealth.[19] They both refuse to let long-term considerations of livable ecology and human survival interfere with the short-term pursuit of material expansion and the bottom line, not to mention the short-term logic of the election cycle."‎
