Temple Mosaic Makers
Temple Mosaic Makers
These young men, and their mother and father are making the new mosaic animals which will grace and protect the temple by sitting on the roof. This is a very traditional art, not taught except through handing done the craft the lineage of the family. The artwork on the roof right now, at this venerable old temple, was created by the young men's father's grandfather. I was immensely thrilled that the whole family just welcomed me and my camera and tripod and were pleased I was so interested in their artworks. I stayed a long time, feeling so privlidged. Later I came back and I had a chance to ask them many questions, through Daxing, my friend the monk. I'll share that in formation here as well - with other photos. Previous 3 photos in the stream show how the pieces of mosaic are made. Then they are affixed to the extremely heavy concrete animals which the father makes in the next room. Pix of that to follow too. I have more photos of their work and the process - to follow. Cant do it now because Flickr is running very very slow and I'm out of time. Two photos immediately below show what the result will be when they are finished. They said they will be working for several more months.

This mosaic documents my time preparing the former office for the new baby during pregnancy: looking at the new baby gear, stockpiling diapers, sorting through papers and reminiscing about my footloose days as an "artist."
