What is a wiki?

A wiki is a collaboratively built website based on template driven html pages using free open source online sites. The word 'wiki' is derived from the Hawaiian word for quick 'wiki wiki' - and is so called because it is quick and easy to create and maintain.

Why use wikis in education?

Take a look at this fabulous site chock full of ideas for using wikis in education. 

Wiki Activity 1:

Take a look at the definition of a wiki in the largest wiki of all, Wikipedia. Then head over to WikiVersity and check out the shared resources available.

Wikiversity is a centre for the creation and use of free learning materials and activities. Its primary priorities and goals are to:

  • Create and host a range of free-content, multilingual learning materials/resources, for all age groups and learner levels
  • Host learning and research projects and communities around existing and new materials

Decide on the specific attributes of the wiki service that you want to use. You'll find a helpful site for this at Wikimatrix

Wiki Activity 3:

Access this  Ementoring Wetpaint wiki and join. Once you have been given advanced permissions as a contributor to the site, please create a page for yourself. On your page, please describe the e-learning strategies that are currently being used in your organisation.

Wiki Activity 4:

Create a Wikispace for yourself and consider how you may wish to use it for student collaboration in your course delivery.
