The CNPS Ad Hoc Committee on Phytophthoras is inviting CNPS Chapter Plant Sale Chairs and theirs volunteers to a workshop on Phytophthoras and CNPS Native Plant Sales to be held in conjunction with the CNPS Chapter Council meeting on March 13,  2016.  The workshop is tentatively schedule from 9am to 12pm and will be held at the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy Nursery.  Save the date!

This half-day workshop will provide information on Phytophthora pathogens, the risks associated with infested plant stock, and how clean nursery practices can reduce these risks.  Our objective is to help Chapters reduce the risk of selling infested plant stock to plant sale customers.

Workshop attendees will assemble at the nursery which is located at the Defense Support Fuel Depot in San Pedro, a restricted access facility,  to hear about how Phytophthoras are a concern in native plant nursery stock and have an opportunity to ask questions on this information.  Attendees will then get to see examples of clean nursery practices and how to evaluate the condition of nursery stock that you grow or buy from a supplier.  Attendees must register in advance to get access and directions to the facility.

Among the presenters will be Kathy Kosta of the California Department of Food and Agriculture and Cris Sarabia of the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy.  Kathy is a Senior Environmental Scientist/Plant Pathologist working in the Pest Exclusion Branch.  Cris is the stewardship manager with the PVPLC and manages the native plant nursery and restoration activities on the peninsula.  Other presenters are being confirmed.

The workshop is free, but advance registration is required through the CNPS Chapter Council websiteRegistration is now closed but you can email membership@sccnps.org to see if there is still space for the workshop .  You are encouraged to bring the volunteers who work on your chapter plant sales to this workshop.

This workshop is being held in conjunction with CNPS Chapter Council meetings so attendees will have the opportunity to participate in Chapter Council activities that are scheduled before and after the workshop.

The Ad Hoc Committee on Phytophthoras was formed by the CNPS Chapter Council last June to, among other things, develop actions to minimize pathogens in CNPS plant sale stock.  Information on the activities of the Ad Hoc Committee can be found here
